I'd consider a made in USA guitar, Gibson has those Melody Makers in the 300-400 range. I have read a lot of good things about those two guitars.

DUde, just get the MIM standard strat and forget about it, once you get better you can upgrade to a better model, but in the meantime you have acces to loads of features. Choose what you like about it and go from there. DUH!

Just don't get the Ibanez Gio. I have one and it is not a very good guitar, that's why it is only $180 bucks. When it comes to guitars you do get what you pay for, to a point.

If you have been saving for this long, hang on a little longer and get the best you can afford, you won't be disappointed.

You can find a Highway 1 Stratocaster all day long on e-bay or craigslist in the $400 - $500 range. Stick to your guns and get what you really want! You will be glad you did :)

Get a used US strat if you can. If not, I prefer the Japanese ones to the Mexican ones but I know a lot of guys that feel the other way.

The only hard and fast rule is this:

Buy the absolute BEST quality guitar you can. Don't cheat yourself and your playing by buying a piece of **** just because it's inexpensive. Good equipment will make learning easier and playing more enjoyable.

When I used to give lessons I can remember several times having to pull a parent aside and tell them that guitar they bought for their son/daughter actually hurt to play. No way anyone was going to enjoy learning on that instrument.
Going cheap when you're not sure if the guitar is for you I can understand, but make sure the guitar is of high enough quality that it stays in tune and doesn't tear up your fingers to play it. Of course this pertains more to acoustics then electrics. So I agree, you should always buy the most guitar you can afford. If the guitar isn't for you, then you'll have a decent resale value.

Get an American-made guitar (or mostly made in America) like the Highway One. Get the model with the humbucker in the bridge. You can probably find one in your price range if since guitar stores are trying to get rid of their inventory. Just bring your cash to the guitar store and go to the guitar manager and say "If you sell me this Highway One for $X, I'm willing to buy now and here's the money (show cash).

I own a MIM Strat and a MIM Tele. Both are great guitars. I bought a Aerodyne Tele for $500 at Guitar Center (black with white binding around body and rosewood fretboard), case was not included. The pastor at my church loved the black tele so much, he traded me the MIM Strat and Tele for the Aerodyne tele. The strat is a 60th annevirsary edition blizzard pearl with a maple neck. I installed EMG-SA pick ups and changed the pick gaurd to black pearloid along with black chrome knobs. The MIM tele is a '92 burgundy, maple neck with GFS mini humbuckers.

To get to the piont, I have found that MIM Fender Strats are made as well as American made and they have better hardware. Fender American Made uses cheaper hardware (maybe for cost reasons).

Buying used is always a good option, but buy what you really want and don't settle for anything else. Do your shopping and take your time. You have time on your side. You can email me direct for additional help at robertjohnlewis@yahoo.com

Yeah, don't settle for a Squier or any cheap guitar cause it will just be a pain in the butt and u will regret it later!!

Trust me, my sis got a cheap one for her first electric and it was no good!!!!

You can't learn on a cheap guitar!!

Squiers/Epiphones don't suck. i'm learning on an Epiphone LP 100 and it does the job -- it cost 270 bucks and is considered "cheap".

i really don't know what's wrong with those guitars other than the pickups or the name on the headstock -- but i'm SURE they don't sound as terrible as you say they are.

those MIM Strats are pretty good for their price you know -- i tried one in the nearby music store [while searching for my second guitar] and as a beginner i couldn't notice the difference much from the American Standard.

***

oh cool there's a guitar named Gio. lol if i gigged on that the announcer could say "here's Gio playing on his Ibanez Gio" LOL
