Hi,
I'm 15 years old and I worked my butt off this christmas break to get enough money to buy my first electric guitar. I really wanna buy a strat but i'm limited by a $400-$500 budget. I played my friend's strat before and really enjoyed it. I've heard a lot of bad things about squiers and starcasters though. I found an Ibanez Gio priced at $180 but I don't know which guitar to get because I'm pretty inexperienced with this kind of stuff. :? I've always wanted a fender but I'm really not sure what to get. I really want my first guitar to be special.
any help or advice would be much appreciated! :D

How about a MIM Strat? I have a MIM Tele and the quality is excellent. There are 2 major differences between the Mexican and American-made guitars. First, the MIM's are usually 21 fret and use vintage fret height/width. So what? That was what ALL Fenders were for years. The American Strats usually have 22 frets and medium/jumbo frets. There is also some difference in the pickups, but not enough to notice for a beginner. You can always upgrade them later.
Street price (not suggested retail) on a new MIM Strat is $400 just about anywhere you go. And the headstock has the Fender logo, not Squier. Spend the money on the guitar and then get a small used amp. You don't need to have a lot of volume until you know what to do with it. Just my 2 cents.

Yea i would go for the MIM Strat (but i think its cuz i little biased). It all depends on what style of music you like to play. I own a HSS Strat and i can make it sound bluesy, and then the next day i can rock it out if i wanted too. If you want an Ibanez, then your prob a metal head.

I agree. Get the guitar you want (Fender). Don't settle on something because of price. Believe me, you'll regret it after a few practice sessions.
Besides, you worked your $@! off, you deserve it.

I hear a MIM calling your name man.....go get it!

I agree with all of the dudes above. MIM Strats are really great guitars! Later on you may want to upgrade, but a MIM is def good enough to keep you going for a long while!! U won't regret it!! Yeah, don't settle for a Squier or any cheap guitar cause it will just be a pain in the butt and u will regret it later!! Trust me, my sis got a cheap one for her first electric and it was no good!!!! You can't learn on a cheap guitar!! Don't let all that work go to waste! The good ol' trusty Strats will searve you well. :) And just play it and make sure you like the feel of it too, that's always important! I'd go with the MIM Strat if I were u!! ROCK ON!!!!!!

I agree price wise the MIM is the way to go. Remember you can always upgrade things like pickups later on as you understand what sound you want. Just make sure the guitar feels good to you before you spend your hard earned money!

Don't settle fpr something you are always going to look back on and have doubts about. MIM and MIJ strats are both very good. Why not also look for a used US strat on ebay? They are close to your price range if you look.

if you hurry, you can find some good american standard strats that sell for around 500-600, cause they're gonna upgrade the american standards in '08

If you will be getting the rest of the money for an AM strat (by working, birthday, w/e) in about 3 months, hold out for it. It will be worth it. I bought a MIM Strat as my first guitar and although it was an amazing guitar, I felt it set me back from the big prize, the AM strat.

If you want an Ibanez neck feel on a strat, it's the highway one. I despise them for that. So in my opinion, go big for the real deal, the AM series strat.

If you have never played guitar before I would buy an acoustic (you can gett a good one for $300). Once you have decided that you are going to stick with it, then buy an electric (a MiM Strat is a good choice).

Starting off on an acoustic (IMO) will make the transition to electric easier. You will always go back to the acoustic to play different styles. I would say I am a 70/30 split (electric/acoustic).

Hope that helps

Because its your first axe, id probably just go with a mexi strat. If you like it and want to further pursue it, then go for the american.
No beginner needs a $1000 guitar.
