I have a question about the single-coil pickups on an American Standard Strat. I was fortunate enough to buy one of these guitars and I noticed when I was trying them out that the pickups are placed in a downward $@!&# from string #1 to #6. Why is this set this way? If I were to make them set at the same level from #1-6 what would that do to my sound?
Thanks,
Shane

More than likely the bass strings would be too close to the magnets and it probably wouldn't sound all that great...it's all about the setup,my friend.

Your bass notes might be a bit loud and fuzzy. Your intonation might be out a bit if the whole pickup is too high.

That keeps the sound balanced, but you might like or dislike that. It's your personal preference, but of course, of you set it at the same level, the 6th string might sound fuzzy, which you MAY like or dislike.

Try experiment with it. It is said that a Strat is one of the most versatile guitar ever. :)

Adjust it and see if you like the sound if you don't adjust it back. Just make some measurements before to adjust it. I've done with mine as well as most everyone else here has done. Just a matter of what appeals to your ear.

Thank you guys for all your responses. It helped me understand why Fender positions them the way they do.
