Let's say Fender asks you to make a signature strat, what is it? Do you go custom shop? Production? Limited edition? Poly? Nitro?

go.

I would simply ask for an exact copy of a 65 sunburst and not change a thing from frets to finish.

a slightly upgraded version of my current axe:

Ash body, honey transparent natural finish.
Black 3 ply pickguard.
Vintage 60´s pickups (I have standard pickups snatched from a 2001 am std)
Rosewood neck (mine is snatched from a 95 strat plus deluxe, real pretty)
Gold Vintage hardware ( I have the hardware of the plus deluxe, the floyd rose bridge.
Hotrodded so the bottom tone knob controls the treble of the bridge pickup.(i love that feature in my guitar)
Maybe locking tuners.

This is a tough thread. So many different options there. Here is mine

1. 1 piece mahogany body

2. Quarter sawn maple neck with ebony fret board. A soft V in the back. Mother of pearl block inlays. The neck should be bound with a vintage white border. Either jumbo or medium jumbo frets. 22 frets on the neck. Locking Schaller tuners (brush nickel). Real bone nut.

3. String through back with a brush nickel hard tail bridge.

4. HH with a Dimarzio PAF pro in the neck and a Dimarzio SD in the bridge. A 5 way selector switch with Humbucking neck in position 1, Split bucker neck in 2, both humbuckers in 3, split bucker in 4, and full humbucker in 5. Mounted on a black pearloid pickguard and black plastic pieces. Greasebucket technology for the wiring.

5. 1 volume and 2 tone knobs (one for each humbucker)

6. A "F" neck plate with SN on the plate.

7. Dunlop dual design strap locks.

I am glad I was being conservative with these specs.

Done.

As soon as you paint it black it becomes 'in the style of, or influenced by'

The first black strat was a custom order a couple years in.

To have one all black would not be far off from the crude sunbursts that originally came out. The 50th anniversary guitars were good.... but not perfect. Look at the variation in the bursts... sweet!

First, I can not imagine why Fender would have any reason to ask for my input, but I will play along....

We would start with a lightwieght Alder body with tone chambers (Sealed).
Next would be the neck, a SRV style (Profile and radius) with 6105 SS frets birdseye maple, an oil finish, the rhinestone side markers (Like on the Danny Gatton), Abalone makers, the new style staggered tuners and the roller nut.
The tremolo would be the Babicz full contact 6 screw model with the American spacing set flush with the body using all the tremolo springs.
Fully copper shielded pick up cavities with a chrome plated aluminum pick guard.
The Pick ups would be, of course a set of Ms. Abbi's 1969 using a Paper and oil 22pf cap with a master volume and the two tone set up to a treble and bass for all three pick ups.
The color would be either red, blue or orange sparkle with all gold hardware.

Not that I have given it much thought mind you.

My sig model would be what I currently have - a H1 Strat with Schaller locking tuners and Custom Shop '69 pickups (copper shielded).

It's my favourite guitar ever! That's what I'd choose as a sig model, if I were a player who warranted their own sig model!

62' Contoured body in Surf Green nitro finish
62" neck with Maple fretboard and compound radius 7.25 - 12, and a deep golden glossy tint. (the compound radius size would be the tricky part)
3 ply white pickguard
Custom Shop 54 pickups
Vintage slotted tuners
Schaller strap locks
3/4 length tremelo bar
Chrome hardware
