Lots of factors could be leading to this. I dunno. It seems hasty to write off a whole brand because of one bad product.

+1 I was thinking the same thing, no need to throw away the chicken for one bad egg.

im not much of a product consumer, but ive bought and sold a plethora of gear over the years and never really gave a crap about price. ive had cheap stuff that suited as well as multi thousand dollar crap that i've had.

ive allready refretted the HW1. now it's great and back to being my main guitar. now what to do with this standard.

the positive part... deciding what guitar to get with the money after i sell this one!

i think im going to build one so i get what i want.

It sounds to me that the problem is in the tone circuit moreso in the wood in the body and fretboard-the fretboard wood has little or no impact on overall tone-another popular misconception. The fact that the guitar is annoyingly trebley even with the tone rolled off points to the tone pots as it would be extremely rare and coincidental for all pups to be that defective tonewise.Maybe you should try a tone circuit mod before getting rid of the guitar and if it is still under warranty it should be covered.I wouldn't completely write off a brand of guitar just because of one anomaly as there are very many exemplary Fenders out there and you'll be doing yourself a great diservice by excluding Fender from your guitar choices.

Just because I didn't like my 1st or 2nd wife, doesn't mean I stopped liking women. I just had to try a few out until I found the right one. Giving up on a brand because you had a bad one is ridiculous. If you like metal, maybe single coils aren't what you're looking for in the first place (and yes, I saw that you have a humbucker in the bridge, but come on). I love Fender.....and even own a Squire that I love (Tele Custom II), but I also own other guitars and brands for different genre.

And what make the HWY One more versatile then the standard american.
Plus I am guessing the Standard is Alder of course just like the HWY One. Don't have a clue as to why one would be so much litter then the other, Alder is a fairly even wood that does not very like the Ash bodies do.

i never owned strats because they sounded "thin". i grew up on metal and preferred humbuckers. recently i got an american special and i simply love it. the clean tones are amazing. still a bit "thinner" on the dirty side but i make adjustments on my amp to cure that. my bandmate plays a les paul so i think the strat adds a cool spice to the mix.
it's your call. contact fender. i think you got a lemon. i know i got a diamond.

Soothme,

Sorry to hear you do not like your American Standard. I personally do not like the new ones either. I played a few (hundred) of them when I was out looking at guitars the last few times. I ended up buying a Highway 1 (because the Standard I liked was gone and did not like any of the rest in the store) and then an American Special over the American Standards.

Well I take that back, I really liked the 2007 American Standard I played 6 months before buying my Highway 1 in 2007, but by the time I went back to get it, it was gone so my Highway 1 came home with me.
