I just purchased an 07 american deluxe and am experiencing a problem with the whammy bar. it slides in and out freely. i know it is the type that locks in but this falls straight out when i tip the guitar. any ideas on how to fix this? as i live in australia it was much cheaper (nearly 50%) to purchase the guitar new from ebay so it has no warranty. any info would be great. also this is the first strat i have owned and when i use the whammy bar it makes the strings create a stretching popping sounds. is this normal? thanks heaps.

Are you sure that you have the bar all the way in?

If it's new, then it can take a pretty good push to get the bar to pop in properly. It shouldn't fall out.

Then there's a set screw at the back of the block, just under the bridge plate, that is used to put some tension on the bar to stop it from spinning so freely.

That stretching and popping probably means that your nut slots are too tight and the strings are binding up in the slots. Did you put a heavier gauge set of strings on it?

Here's a funny thing. A couple years ago I bought a brand new American Series Strat. Somehow it left the factory with the pop-in trem block that's used on the Deluxes. My local shop swapped me a pop-in bar for the screw-in bar that came with the guitar.

I've got an american deluxe as well - just give it a good firm push in and you'll feel and here it "pop" into place. :D
