Now that we are in 2010 what makes a 90's strat unique? I mean we all know '57 are special and 60's have their own mojo and not too many people like 70's strats, but years down the road when they become vintage what will be their defining features?

I like the way the kind of modernized it through the the 80's and 90's, and I especially like the Plus from the 90's. And the fact that they started the custom shop and signature models is kind of awesome I guess.
I think the 80's/90's are some of the most important years because of the revolutionizing and the climb of quality.

But if I have to pick a perticular type of guitar that will become "vintage" I guess it will be the first signatures, and the Plus line.
And perhaps the MIJ guitars?

I don't think the 90's American Standards are all that special, or ever will be except for nostalgic or sentimental reasons. I prefer the "upgrades" that the original Standard got in 2000 (American Series) and then again in 2008 (back to the American Standard name).

Defing features: 90's MIA Standard Strats were sometimes made of poplar, all sunburst and some solid colors had a veneer glued over the top and back, swimming pool pickup routing, two string trees, non-staggered tuners, TBX tone system, and crummy mystery metal trem block. I don't like those features. But that's just my opinion. Some of those guitars sound just fine and that's what it's all about, right?

Fender pumped out huge numbers of American Standards in the 90's. There are just too many for them to be collectible. The vintage reissues from the 90's will probably be more highly regarded in the future. Same with the Plus and signature models like OssyVezzy mentioned. The short lived MIA California Series guitars from 1997 are already shooting up in price the past few years due to their limited numbers and the "controversy" over where they were really made, making them conversation pieces I guess.

But nothing will increase in value over time like the pre-CBS Fender guitars and amps have. That was their golden era in which everything else from then on is measured against. It won't be repeated.

To answer your specific question, I think the 90s Strats will be remembered for their consistency - predictable build quality and predictable timber quality. You still stumble across an exceptional one now and then, but they're pretty much all good from that period on.

Ironically, many of the display quality 50s and 60s Strats we see, were probably not the best players when they came out the factory. Hence they have survived with little wear. The great ones were probably snatched up and played into the ground..

I personally like the 90's strats for the quality of the necks. The frets ends are really clean on the ones I have. I had a 2005 Am. Standard and the fret ends were a little sharp and stuck out just a touch.

I have a 1990 Strat Ultra with Lace sensors. The quality of this guitar will make it a collectible, in due time. If people think the '70's Stratocasters are collectible then maybe they will want to acquire some quality.

Absolutely agreed! The 1999 American Std. I bought secondhand off someone had a much cleaner neck than the 2008 one I had a while back.

Ditto

One of my favorite guitars (I only have 4) is a 2008 Am Std; BUT it's fret ends are a little sharp!

I have a 96 and love it. It's so smooth. I think there will be 90s purists just like there are 70s purists now even though recently the 70s were hated.

90's era guitars Am Std, Custom Shop, MIM pretty much saved the company. Like said there are purists.

Value wise- I beg to differ. The reason is, I saw a '72 strat all natural ash in a music shop back in '94-95 for $1500NZD. Now, it would fetch $3500-4000NZD 2010. Not bad for a strat with the worst reputation eh

Now Am Std will increase but ever so slightly. Perhaps the Plus line and everything above will gain in value with respect to age and condition.

But the era of soaring prices Im afraid are merely pre-CBS instruments :)

Yes, the 90's necks are the best IMO. the pool routes resonate and the colour pallette across the range surpasses all eras- perhaps except the early to mid/late 60 custom colours :)

Funny, I do not even think about 2010 guitars. I guess i am locked into the 80s and 90s too much. Despite many people not liking the swimming pool routes on the Plus Series, I love these guitars. Real quality for the price.

Well if I was going to get a brand new guitar, I would probably get something like the 57 american vintage.
If I wanted an American Standard, I would go with a late 80's early 90's one.

Funny- I went looking for shoes the other day and it seems that Nike are re-issueing old shoes from the nineties too

If it is what he claims it is then it might be worth it.
I have no idea what these guitars fetch over your side of the pond, but on UK prices that looks to be a decent deal.

Can you get photos?
We need 'em!
Lots!!!
