Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I am new to single coil pickups and need some information.

I was just playing the Strat I bought yesterday and I noticed that when the volume control on the guitar is set to either 1 or 2 there is virtually no sound coming out of the amp from any of the pickup positions. This is true playing out of the amp's speaker and through headphones (people are sleeping so I'm trying to keep the noise down). I have to turn the volume knob to 3 before I hear anything. Heck, when playing through headphones I could hear the guitar acoustically even while wearing the headphones but I couldn't hear anything coming from the headphones themselves.

While I didn't expect anything loud when the volume was set to 1 or 2 I certainly didn't expect to hear nothing. My old Epi SG with humbuckers would still give off some sound when the volume was set to 1 or 2 and I expected the same from this Strat.

The knobs are on so that the number sits next to the screw that is between the bridge pickup and the volume knob. In other words, when the #1 is next to that screw the volume is on 1 and when the #5 is next to that knob the volume is on 5 and so on.

Is this lack of volume on the first two settings normal for single coil pickups or is there something wrong with my guitar?

That's pretty much prototypical for a single-coil Strat with a standard audio-taper volume pot. Nothing to be concerned about.

Thank you. The guitar is perfect in every other way so I was surprised that something might be wrong with it.
