Yeah that video certainly shows Clapton playing a standard tele with a strat neck. I can not tell for sure if the body was modded, but certainly the neck bottom curve was flattened. You can see a little gap on the edges where the neck starts to curve..but overall a pretty tight fit. Sounds just like a tele still as well.

I do notice at the very bottom of the neck below the last fret..there is some serious wear. someone was playing that quite a bit below the 21st fret..strange.

At least we know for sure it was not an MIM as the vid is from 1969. I can't imagine how old that neck was to be so worn in 1969..probably a pre cbs..and probably much more affordable and available then finding one now.

Personally I think it's a good match and as stated earlier, the best guitar I ever played was a friend of mines tele with a strat neck..all early 60's stuff. Funny thing is he sounds like Clapton..I guess that is where he got the inspiration to make a tele/strat hybrid.

Hi, so I was really wanting to buy a Squier Cabronita modified tele with a bigsby, but I'm really not a fan of tele necks at all. Can I just take it to a shop like guitar center and ask them to switch it out? Will it still play all the notes right? And can one remedy the holes with a material like wood putty and pain over it? Thanks for all the help! :D

Edit: I forgot to make it clear that I did want either a fender or squier strat neck

Yes it should work fine as all teles and strats use the same scale. There should be no holes to worry about puttying but the only concern could be small gaps since the heel of a strat neck is curved while a tele is flat. However if you get a 22 fret neck that will cover it all. If you use a standard 21 fret the gaps should not be too bad but to make that perfect would require filling and painting so probably not worth it unless you are ultra picky about the gap.

I read before that Clapton used the neck off his brownie strat for the tele.

......and....if you recall Clapton's remarks from the Brownie Tribute promo, the guitar had been well-played by the time he acquired it, [what attracted him in the first]which might explain the wear on the neck previously commented on.

I watched that video last night for like the 5th time. I think Clapton got the guitar in 67, that's a lot of wear the 1st owner put on it. Wonder what his story was? That would be cool to know.

I was in a Derek and the Dominos mood yesterday, so had to listen to the album, watch a bunch of youtube videos, and bust out my MIJ 54 style strats. lol

A journeyman musician can put a lot of milage on a guitar in 10 years. Add to that the time Eric used it as his primary instrument and you have its condition on retirement.

Clapton bought Brownie from London's Sound City while touring with Cream on 7 May 1967 for $400 and used it for both concert and studio.

The guitar appeared on his debut album Eric Clapton where it can be seen on the cover. Its most noteworthy usage can be heard on the Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs LP also recorded in 1970.

After 1971 Brownie served as back-up for Eric's main Fender Stratocaster, Blackie.

At the 1969 Blind Faith concert in Hyde Park, London Clapton played a sunburst Custom Telecaster which was fitted with Brownie's neck. Eric preferred to buy a neck with a worn fretboard rather than a new one as he felt that a neck, worn from playing, had obviously been favoured by players, and was likely to play very well.

Could this really be the Hyde Park Tele? From the video/film I don't recall it having such a dark border. :?

Must be the nature of the black and white print because the burst is really washed out.

I would believe it. I am sure the players he looked up to had pretty worn necks.

I understand the concept of Zigging while others Zag...

But to what end...??

What's to be achieved..??

Where's the benefit..??

Will it make you a better Player... ??

Will it sound as no other Stat before it..??

If not, it's just a self-agrandizement that 99.999% of the non-guitar aware audience will never even be cognisant of...

That said,

If it makes you feel better... GO FOR IT !! :D

cheers!

Sometimes a neck that won't work where it ought to works better where it oughtn't. And you can swap those necks back and forth without doing a thing to either the neck or the guitar body. The only thing you ever have to adjust is the fit of the Tele neck against the Strat pickguard - square out the corners and you are good to go. That's it.

Image

The neck is already bolted on, now you just have to sand/grind/carve the pickguard so that the contour matches the Tele neck.
