Hi,
I hope this hasn't been answered elsewhere in the forum. I have a deluxe ash strat and I get a ''ding'' noise (probably from the springs in the back cavity) almost every time I touch the bar-even slightly. The problem is that it passes through the cable to the amp. Any ideas? Thx a lot.

Dings and pings from tremolo use can also come from the nut.
The strings might be binding there.

I found a spare spring and started changing one spring at a time but the ding was always there- probably it's the nut then- any ideas? I've heard sth about pencil lead...does it work? thx

Hi,

Firstly, observe where the sound is coming from. If its from the bridge side it would be a fatter sound and a bit thinner coming from the nut. Open the back cover and pump the whammy bar while peeking at the springs. If they are catching somewhere you will be able to see them jerk. If the springs expand/contract smoothly, then check if the whammy block (through which the strings pass). There may be (may be) something sticking out (a small bit/chip of wood) restricting the movement and causing the *ding*. If so, check and remove. Also check the actual action of the bridge. There may be some small piece of metal (really rare) on the individual string height adjuster. If so, file it off.

Check that the strings pass just through the nut comfortably, without any drag. You can lay down the guitar and press the whammy while looking at the nut. The strings should have smooth motion. If there is a catch somewhere on a string, you will need to remove that string and file the groove very, very carefully, to have the string move smoothly.

Hope you will be able to solve your problem.

Thanks a lot guys, it was the nut- I did the pencil thing and no more dings n' pings- not to mention the vintage darkened nut look

A happy ending to the problem, that's great.
