Hey guys, I have a mexican strat that I picked up about 16 years ago, that has been pretty much been sitting in storage for about 10 years. So I got it out the other day because I had the urge to start playing again, and I decided to give it a good cleaning....

Well, I guess glass cleaner isnt the best thing, because now the fretboard is all blotchy, like some of the finish has been removed. I notice when it is wet though, it looks great, so I am thinking it might just be an oil finish? Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If it's rosewood the alcohol and ammonia in the cleaner probably dried it out. Get a good fretboard cleaner/oil and treat it. I've been using the Dunlop 65 stuff for years, but any of them seem to be good. Rosewood is left pretty much unfinished so it will take oil/cleaners. If it's maple, you shouldn't use anything on it - just wipe it off with a dry cloth. Maple fretboards have a finish on them that will get screwed up if you use liquids on them. If it's maple and liquid got under the old finish, I'm not sure there's much that can be done.
