HI guys, I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I can't seem to find the info I need. I have a split wilkinson roller nut that I want to install on a 95 american rosewood strat neck. There was a user here who actually posted pictures of his manual for this nut in another thread, but I can't seem to PM him so I'm posting for help here. I need to know how much fretboard to remove to make the shelf for this nut.

Please Please help. I know you guys use a Jig for this. I have many woodworking machines and tools, and I'm sure I can do this myself with the correct guidance.

Leo

Hi jeffbeckib,

Here is a link to another discussion about the Wilkinson nut. On the second page of the thread there are pictures of a manual, and pictures of the different nuts on Strats. The thread also has a lot of links posted, though I didn't check them all out. Maybe something here might help you out. :)

I also found this:

thank you, but unfortunately one link tells me how to install the LSR, not the wilki, and the other link is more about where one could Find the nut to purchase.

Howdy!

I believe that you could follow the instructions on the link bellow for the LSR and then remove the remaining timber towards the head stock.

http://www.electric-guitar-info.com/roller-nut.html

The LSR kit comes with a conversion plate that for the Wilkinson stlye so I'm presuming that the front edge of the LSR and Wilkinson are the same.

I'd recommend getting the above confirmed before making carring out any permanent work on your neck.

Hope this helps

Andy

I had one installed on a neck I have, but I took it in and had it done, cost me $40. I didn't want to try it myself.

I can measure it and tell you what was removed on mine, and I can measure the ones on my strat plus and tell you what was removed there, but can't do it until I get home.

That would be awesome, and a pic would be great as well showing the shelf from the top and sides.

thanks again.

I actually have the 2nd version of the Wilkinson, but I think the footprint is the same on it.

Well, on a rosewood fretboard neck, it measured 1/2" of material cut away, 1/8" deep measured from the center of the fretboard, where the radius is the highest. It's also looks to be exactly half the thickness of the nut itself.
I took a measuerment from the inside of the first fret to the edge of the cut and that was 1.25".

Let me see how the pics turned out. I was trying to take a pic with the ruler, but it's stainless steel and was getting a lot of glare with the flash, and blurry without.

I measured a maple neck with the rollernut also, it was the same deep, but it measured 1 9/32" from the inside of the first fret, 1/32 more than the rosewood.

I'm confused by your question.

You should not install your own nut unless you know about first fret clearance.
Or at least if your happy with the current setup on the guitar the clearance the current nut has.

You subtract that off the rolling nuts clearance point and then the remainder is how much wood needs to go (while keeping on the cautious side of things).

If your just going to cut so much wood out after one measurement or someone elses then I think your going about it in the wrong manner.
