Hello fellow Fender fanatics,

I was wondering, which guitar is JM using in this video? I'm identifying it as some sort of '60s Stratocaster... anyone know?

I can't be shure, But it looks early CBS, with the large headstock, Most likely late sixties, It looks to have a nitro finish. 8)

Sounds like it to me too! I was thinking a Vintage Hot Rod '62. How do you feel about this thought?

Hi chung_m: it has a big headstock and a hardtail bridge (you can see the bridge clearly at 6.35 in the vid.). So it sure as heck ain't no '62 Hot Rod:

That doesn't mean that I know what it is, though.

But since there's nothing like it in the catalog at present I'm guessing it's either something the Custom Shop ran up for him, or it's a real CBS Strat. Someone more expert than me will have to say if and when they came with hardtails during that period.

Cheers - C

PS Pino Palladino (on bass in the vid) once gave me his unused parking ticket, saving me a pocket full of change. He didn't know me from Adam; he just reached in the car window with it as I was reverse parking in tinpan alley one day. That was nice of him, wasn't it? :)

Thank you Ceri! I just really like that sound, and was in the market for a strat anyways so I wanted to find one close to that sound.

Pino is an awesome bassist! I really enjoy him, and great story, it's crazy how he just handed it to you like that.

He's using a '66 or '67 Strat with a rosewood board. Note the lack of the bold, "flying" Stratocaster font on the headstock that '68 and later CBS models use.

Yes, you could order a Strat from this timeframe with a hardtail bridge, although not many people went for it (hardtail bridges have been an option on Strats since 1954).

If it isn't the real deal, it's a custom shop model.

It seems that JM not only shares my birthday, but has my good taste in Strats as well.
