Ahh, the old wood debate! It's been a while! Here is a pic of an acoustic I recently played made entirely out of carbon fibre. Amazing sound and action. Apparently they are gaining popularity because they are so resistant to climate influence.

Just thought I'd throw this in. :D

By the way, this is an expensive, high quality axe. ($2600)

Peace,

Of course. And I bet it sounded interesting. The opposite end of the spectrum might be the Danolectric 53magnetone pointed to. Im sure very many people love the way each sounds.

Can you describe the tone of that graphite guitar?

If I was blindfolded, I could not tell it from a spruce topped, wooden guitar. It had a depth of tone somewhere between something like a Martin D18, (which I consider to be kind of a benchmark of accuracy in the highs and kind of medium in the fullness of the bass), and a Gibson Jumbo, (less perfect highs and bigger, fuller bass, big strumming sound.)

Hope you can understand my description!

I was really impressed, although the traditional part of me certainly had problems with the concept.

Except we are comparing Apples and Oranges... They are both fruit but quite different.

Same with an acoustic guitar compared to an electric guitar. The tone wood issue is a completely different set of parameters and applications for different results...
Carbon Fiber.....I could of used a nice CF Cervelo R3 on my training ride of 86 KM yesterday...

Seriously you cannot compare tonewoods for an electric to an upscale acoustic.
If an acoustic top is multi piece than a laminate on top for visual effect then that acoustic is going to sound like garbage, which is why I don't even consider an acoustic under the $2,000 dollar range and if they are ready to be plugged in...No but In this sense I'm a purist who fingerpicks and listens to D'agostino, Doyle Dikes, Leo Kotke, Pierre Bensusan, Al Petteway

Now I will say that...Ovations on stage cut through but 98% of acoustics I hear trying to cut thru a Bass, drums and One or two electric guitars is like bringing a paring knife to a Samurai battle....
I also like the sound of Carbon Fiber Cello's and Viola's

But these are my idea of tone woods....

There are two different types of ash. White (also known as swamp ash) is very dense and sounds bright. Black is not so dense and sounds warmer. Alder is about identical in density to black ash.

yeah the deluxe is swamp ash, it was very heavy and had a bright tone that's opposite of my liking, took it in to swap and now they are saying I can't swap it!!! BS which of course I'm not taking!

Anyway if my body ( guitar that is ) is made up of 3 to 5 pieces,I have no issue with it as long as all the pieces were picked from the same batch. This is another important aspect, when building from multiple pieces, choosing wood that is from the same batch or tree baulks will ensure uniformity in the transmission of string vibrations.

IMHO, who cares? Your guitar will be a solid body.
It will have unique sounds. ALL GUITARS VARY.
No real biggie, I say.

If Fender guitars all sounded the same = NF No Fun
How does anyone know what IS REALLY UNDER THE PAINT until the paint is sanded off :?: :?: :?:

Plus, 53 Mag, your guitar's sounds/tones will change from player to player,
from pedal to pedal, from amp to amp, and, from guitar tone/volume settings.

You Go, Guy :!: :!: :!:

Thanks. Toppscore :)

Yes, I thought that was a pretty good job of matching the pieces so the seams aren't glaringly obvious. They do use better looking wood for the finishes that show the wood. And the veneers used on some models have convinced a few people that they have a one-piece body.

+1.
I feel the Fender guitar wood issues/discussions/questions/inquiries,
no matter how much discussed and towards any which end of desired info,
is ALWAYS very interesting.

Thank you Big Jay * Love wood discussions like this. Much appreciated.
I believe all the guitars sound different, if one wants to be “picky” enough.

IMHO, Wood or NoWood, sounds come out and guitarists have options of many things
that can change sounds. Take the greatest built CS Stratocaster ever made with the most
perfect wood ever cut and shaped. Compare that $10,000(+) Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster
with an average STARcaster. Super Hall of Fame pros can make any guitar sound good.

Pedals, effects, amplifiers, speakers, amp control settings, guitar tone/volume settings,
fretboard finger play, hand/palm muffling, single pick, no pick, finger/thumb picks
all make the same guitar sound different, even with the same player and gig setup.

IMHO, wood is wood. For sure we all “want the best”, but really, how can one tell
what is under the paint. You buy a Fender guitar and it sounds good and you adjust
your playing & gig gear to make the tones you desire.

Yes, great wood sounds “different” that average wood. But, you still have to adjust
the guitar and gear with a guitar made of “great” wood as well.

Hoping 53 Mag makes a guitar that is a keeper, and will sound good to his play,
his ears, his gig gear and his styles.

They are keepers, that... I have no doubt of the result.....However were I building a classical or a steel string acoustic, that would be a different matter. But I have been tweaking all my guitars since 74 so I know what I'm going for.....
You don't spend this amount of time and expense without a set plan laid out well in advance.
There are times when you have to deviate a bit, but that is just working with wood.
It's a maleable material, yet it's often in a state of flux due to climatic conditions....
Just stay tuned....BTW, those couple of pics of the house I posted in the build thread, that is all a custom design build, with no blueprints, just what the customer envisioned and what developed to suit her idea's...

No no. I just played this at a new boutique (oh god), guitar shop! First I'd seen of the darn things and I couldn't help but be impressed!

Actually, the one I wanted to walk out of with is a brand I have never heard of "Tinker". And the guy makes them right here in my own town!! What a stunning instrument!!! Beautiful to play. Great sound. And of course - Drop Dead Gorgeous!!!

Image

I have to save up! I think it might be the nicest acoustic I have ever had in my hands.

Anyway Toppscore, I play using my fingers on my Strat. Not sure if I would use fingers or national finger picks on the Tinker. And I play folk, rock, strumming and picking and a bit of lead on the Stratocaster.
