I have a Strat exactly like the one FirstMeasure shows pictures of. The only difference seems to be that mine has the solid maple neck, and is clearly marked "Made in Japan".

I bought this in 1989, or 1990 at an Air Force base in Germany, at the electronics store there. Obviously no one knew what to do with it, since all of the strings were broken above the locking nut. I have never seen another one like mine, until now.

I have done a little work to mine, as you can see below.

Image

I added the EMG switching humbucker in 1998 or 99, and the EMG single coils a year or so later. I added a battery compartment around the same time as the single coils, because I got tired of lifting the pick guard to change the battery.

I just recently had it painted.

The EMG humbucker was originally placed at the same angle as the single coil pickup that it replaced. I didn't like the look, and thought it sounded a little off on the low notes, so I put it straight when it was painted. I had to route and file a new pick guard, since the stock ones don't have the space for the humbucker or the Kahler Spyder bridge.
I also changed to black knobs and selector switch, as the original knobs had cracked and didn't say on well.

It is interesting to learn that these are not very common. I wonder how many were really made.

That's a nice guitar. That's only the third Kahler Spyder I've seen, the second was on a Sunburst Strat on Ebay. They're wonderful trems. A lot beefier than the Floyd Rose's that fallowed. The paint job is really cool, nicely done. And the pickup's must make it Scream.

I'm still not sure if mine American after all. I double checked the www.guitardaterproject.org again, and it says it was made in Japan in 1984-1987 and in America between 1988 and 1989. With the tremelo like your's, I'm leaning toward 1988, which would make it American. :? either way, '80's Strats made after CBS sold out are Cherry, no matter what factory made 'em..

FirstMeasure - I don't know much about the history of the Strats. You mention the ones made after CBS sold out. When was that?

I bought this strat in 89, when I was in high school it is an 88 model though. Had to work full time at Taco Bell to earn the money to pay for it. In 20 years I have never seen another one like it until now. Mine is U.S. made the SN starting E8, no mods have been done, and since I was so scared to play it while I was at school it is as pristine as the day I bought it.

It is nice to find out I am not nuts. I've shown it to a lot of people who would not belive it was stock.

1985, I didn't mean to imply anything negative about CBS era Strats, since I've only played a couple. They were nice, too.

This is a 1988 American Standard Stratocaster in Olympic White, the antique yellowing is all natural :) I bought it brand new from Guitar Center in 1989, it was advertised as one of 30 in southern California and 200 nationwide. But it was also advertised as The Jimi Hendrix Commemerative Stratocaster Sale, the sale commemerated Jimi, not the Strat, so I don't know how milseading they were about the Rarity. I also don't know if it's the same as yours, but I love to go on about my White "Gramma" Strat. It's served for 16 years befor the pickups went harmonic. Now it awaits new pick ups and intonation.

I just recently bought that exact same guitar (3rd owner). it came with all the original manual, tags, sticker and receipt. It was also purchase brand new from Guitar Center in September 1989. The inspection tag on my guitar has a different date (8/30). But it does however have the same signature or initials.

here is the same guitar but mine has rosewood fretboard.

But the only thing that boggles my mind is that there is no indication on where this guitar was made MIA or MIJ?

Same with mine. But through a lot of research I found that the Japanese ones always say Made in Japan. And kahler only made the Spyder with Floyd Rose lic. parts for about a year and a half, from 88-89. The Japanese Serial Numbers with E at the begining are from 85-86. Im 99% sure we have American Strats.

It wouldn't matter to me if it was Japanese, 'cause the mid to late 80's Strats are great!
