By the way, what kind of amp are you using? Any effects? An amp contributes hugely to tone and is the other half of the equation when chasing down a certain sound. Some amps color the tone so much that it's hard to dial in a variety of sounds no matter what guitar you are using.

I use a Vibroverb, the EQ is pretty good, it goes from really dark to very bright. It pretty thick on the blackface tone, I don't think I can get a tweed tone out of it... but I prefer the blackface tone anyways.

I have the standard effects; delay, overdrive, distortion, etc, but prefer just to go straight to the amp.

How do you guys use your Strats to mimic the sounds of other guitars? I remember a long time ago I watched a special on the Fender Strat and one of the musicians interviewed said you could use a Strat to sound like les Paul, a 355, a tele, etc, just by playing with the tones and volume. Anyone do this?

Why would you need any other tone but a "strat" ?

:D

How about Gallaghers use on "A Million Miles Away" from Irish Tour. Simply beautiful.

If you have never heard this I URGE you ASAP to hear this solo.
The guitar playing is perfect - the person in the song is suffering from
extreme lonliness and he compares himself to a piece of driftwood just
bobbing away on the water. His volume and tone control mimics this action... what a musician Rory was !!!!

Two black HSH Strats with the same pickup layout, black shell pickguards... but with different necks and bridges.

The maple neck version shown below has a Deluxe Locking Tremolo Assembly installed, while the rosewood neck pictured above a normal American 2-point synchronized bridge with stainless steel block saddles.

Jeff, I would be very happy if you post a pic of the rosewood-necked black HSH Strat with the Deluxe Locking trem.

considering different woods, different pickups,a strat would sound close, but not that identical... example a les paul with a warmer punch, compared to a brighter and clearer single coil sound..

You can really get this...John's Rickenbacker 325 from a Strat:

Image

There's two ways to do it:
1. Middle or bridge pickup, bass down on amp, treble up. Play through a VOX amp and you are nailing John's rhythm tone exactly. I swear by it. I really, really wanted a Rickenbacker 325, but just monkeying around on my Strat I now see no need for the $3,000 Ric 325.

2. Same settings as above; once again, playing through a VOX amp is a big help. However, this time to the Strat you do the following: Tune down a whole step and then put a capo at second fret. You now have that shorter 325 scale. Not only are you sounding exactly like John on his Ric, but you are playing like John.

I've used the tone knobs to get a Gibson tone with the 2 and 4 possitions. I also own a Clapton Strat so that helps too.

Eric Clapton wanted his signature model having the best of both worlds: the fatness and crunch of his Gibsons and the crisp single-coil sound of a classic Strat. Fender's response was the Elite 12dB active mid-boost (MDX) circuit designed by Jim Demeter and John Carruthers, which makes the single-coils to sound like humbuckers. Clapton liked the boost (he called it a "compressor") but wanted more of that, prompting the R&D team to replace the Elite pickups with Gold Lace Sensor pickups and a new preamp with 25dB of gain with the midrange frequency tweaked approximately at around 500 Hz.

I would love to be able to walk into Fender and explain the sound I want from a Strat and have them willingly oblige, PLUS do it for free.

I guess that's one of the perks that comes with being a guitar icon like Eric.

Jeff Beck was also offered to have a signature model at the time, but he rejected the idea until 1991, when he opted for an Artist Series guitar based on the Plus series line of 1987.

Image

The Jeff Beck Stratocaster in its original form resembled much to a regular Strat Plus, but had several important features Jeff liked a lot:

1. An early 50s "baseball bat" neck shape with a 22-fret dark rosewood fretboard glued on a 2-piece maple neck, MicroTilt neck adjuster and BiFlex truss-rod system.

2. Lace Sensor Golds in a humbucker/single/single configuration with a push-push button for coil-splitting.

3. An American Series 2-point tremolo system with Wilkinson roller nut (changed to LSR in 1993) and Sperzel TrimLok staggered locking machine heads.

4. Four distinctive finishes: Sparkling Black, Vintage White, Seafoam Green and Midnight Purple. The Sparkling Black finish was only available on the Custom Shop version of this guitar.

Image

Reflecting Jeff's personal tastes, his signature model has been updated with new features 10 years later: the Lace Sensors were replaced by a set of dual-coil ceramic noiseless pickups with a straight 5-way pickup switching and the neck shape slimmed down into a thinner "C" profile with a smooth contoured heel for better access to the upper registers. The four finishes of the previous model were replaced by Olympic White and Surf Green.

I can get some nice warm tones from my Strats with a tube screamer and turning down the tone control, but there's no way it would ever sound like a heavy solid body LP with buckers or semi-hollow 335 with buckers, no way! I have all 3, there's a big difference in tone when I reach for my 335. The only thing that comes close to a 335 on my Strat is when I blend the neck and bridge pups, it gets close to the 335 middle position, that sweet BB tone, but it's still no 335.
