It's kind of a personal feel thing. You may want to go to a guitar center or similar and try out different necks and see what is most comfortable to you. My friend likes V necks, I usually can't stand them and we have about the same size hands.

I prefer almost no radius at all...if it were up to me the neck would be flat. I had an old Jazz bass that the previous owner had the neck flattened and it was so comfortable for me, it inspired me to play bass..so now I play bass and guitar.

Also bear in mind set up and string size can have an effect on speed and comfort as well. If a guitar is set up the way I like it (super duper low action, 10's down tuned drop c#), I probably would not even be able to tell the radius or cut, or care really. I would just think it was a sweet ax.

Necks, where do all of the different varieties have their strengths in terms of playability? 7.25", 9.5", vintage radius, v shape, boat neck etc?

Flatter radius means easier bending.... neck shape is the back of the neck and relates comfort to the size of the hand. Boat necks are for people with monster sized hands. V necks are my personal favorite, I wish MIM strats come with it.... Some of those other radius are just what fender made back then and becomes vintage reisssue today...
