I ordered a trem arm for my MIM Strat only to find out it doesn't fit. According to the seller, the MIM Strats use a different thread from the US and Japan Strats.

Is that true? If so, why?

Yes, they are different.

Why? Who knows.

I'm pretty sure trem arms generally come in 3 sizes:

10-32 UNF {USA Fender}
5mm[M5] {MIM,MIJ and some Squiers}
6mm{or10-24UNC} {Squiers}

The MIM Classic '50s and Classic '60s re-issues, as well as some of the MIM artist models with a vintage style (2-7/32" string spacing) bridge, use the standard MIA vintage trem arm with 10-32" threads.

Most MIM use metric as most of the World uses metric.

Found this out on the callaham web site while ordering a new tremblock for my MIM strat. String spacing is different too, at 2 1/16 " vs 2 7/32" for MIA.

My 08 American Standard came with 2-1/16 inch string spacing. That was one of the new changes for that year. Just when we have it figured out, wham! They change it up on us. :?

Just so Fender could peeve us off. But realistically, the tremolo's are different. The MIM are based upon really old Fenders...thus Vintage Tremolo's. The American strats for the past 20 years or so has been changed from the vintage to a new strat. Makes you feel better, the Fender deluxe strat has a pop in tremolo arm, but the standard and below have screw in arms.... Different threading of course. But if you want a change in that, find a Tremolo block that will accept the American Tremolo arm but fit on a MIM tremolo plate...

The replacement Tremlo Blocks for MIM Strats from Callaham offer "pop-in" arms.

I believe that they call them "virtual pop-in" arms. I have a few of each length of trem arms from Callaham, and they can just be inserted in the hole like a pop-in, but they all have threads if you want to screw them in. I think that all of Callaham's arms are standard American threads.

Yup, regardless of block (either to replace american or mexican) the holes for the arms or 10/32". Just checked on their website.

It is true.

Because the Asian factory or factories Fender contracts to make these wholesale cheap tremolos for them are well established and already making them for several other guitar manufacturers with other than Fender dimensions firmly in place. Consequently, these factories are not going to absorb the down time and expense to retool unless there's a BIG financial consideration from Fender and for all the obvious reasons, this isn't going to happen. Now under other circumstances such as Fender's vintage line up, Fender is forced to anti-up where the cost is well passed on to the consumer.
