Finally, I know what a blocked trem looks like and how big the block is. http:

Judging from your photo, to replicate the original, you would have to set the trem claw flush to the wall of the rout and remove the block.

Got a busy day ahead...Gonna wait on ME for the rest of it.

Doc

I'm quite happy with my setup. :D

My trem is blocked with a machined aluminum block. I replaced the stock MIM trem block with a GFS steel trem block. I have 5 springs installed. The sustain and tone is great.

Did you order the machined aluminum block from some where or did you custom make it your self. That sounds like it would sound pretty cool...

Actually, the aluminum block was part of the cutter hear for a mat cutter (used for matting/mounting photographs). I was rummaging around in my junk drawer, found the cutter head and saw the aluminum block. The rest, as they say, is history.

quote="Kersen13"] I don't recommend screwing the claw all the way into the body with a blocked trem as I found that doing so reduces the pressure on the block by pulling the trem block away from the wooden block (assuming that's what you used).

Of course, this could be remedied by fabricating a new block to fit snuglly into the wider space, permitting the guitar to resonate through that entire system. I was obliged to do that on an MIM BG Polka-dot because the mass block on the MIM's is not as thick as the vintage block hence demanding a thicker piece of wood.

Based on the narrative, the trem claw is practically tight to the body and the photo suggests that the mass block is not quite touching as in the Blackie. The wood block appears standard Fender issue for that purpose.
We've gone over the specs for that long time past on other threads, and I've owned two myself. Still have my '89 Pewter. Just need to check out that trem claw position in that guitar.
Sighted sub, sank same. Hope verybody learned something new today. I know I did. I must have looked at the back of that Christies catalog many times and never saw the details of the placement of that system until today.

That's what its all about around here. 8)

Doc

"No block on Blackie.
Eric's current guitars all have the block.

ME"

Which is what I have been saying all along.

Vindicated :!: Curfew shall not ring tonight.
Want to have more fun :?:  Check out the position of the bridge saddles on the old 'Blackie'. Every single one of Clapton's Strats pictured in the Christie's catalog is setup exactly the same.

Well I ordered a brass replacement one. I went with the brass cause I think it has more musical properties than Steel. Everyone and their uncle has an opinion though. I went down to home depot and found some pieces of mohogany to make new blocks for it. but I have to wait and see what sizes I need for the new trem block. but pretty stoked can't wait to hear how it sounds..

I have a MIM stratocaster which I have Blocked and took out the springs. Now its got amazing sustain. But I was thinking of replacing the tremblock with a Nice Steel one or Brass. Will it make as much difference in tone and over all sound. The posts that I have read all the people who replaced theirs were amazed at the difference but none of them were BLOCKED. Will I get the benefit. I am hoping so. Any Ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Use brass, its really heavy and allows more tone to vibrate through it. Do remember you need the to keep the guitar grounded, so alway leave a least one spring attached.

Well I have received and Installed my new Block what a difference. especially arpeggios sound clear and punches through not drowned out. Also tuning is a lot better with the more solid Block. It has more bell like sounds too. the sustain is good not tremendously better but noticeable... well worth it

I don't block because I use my trem for some nice shimmering effects..:) I don't do the diving stuff...not for me. I am also a fan of the steel blocks because to me they sound a tad bit brighter than brass.JMO
