My Strat goes out of Tune alot when i hit the tremolo bar(I got a complete setup with thicker gauge strings put on about 2 months ago) Does it need the complete setup again? someone said it might? Or do I need to tighten the screws inside the back? (Its not the strings it happens with a brand new set)

It goes out of tune with Small vibratos(no dive bombs)

that happens when the tremolo is used, consider getting locking tuners

What kind of Strat and how hard do you hit the trem? If you just had it set up a couple of months ago with your current string guage then your set-up person should have gotten it functioning well for you. Some graphite lubricant or nut sauce or something else will help with this as well. However, no regular trem is going to keep the guitar in tune if you're doing a bunch of heavy dive bombs, etc.

Do you hear any popping or clicking from the string when turning a tuner? if so, it's because the string is getting caught on the nut. Lubricate and/or carefully make the nut slots wider.

It would be nice to know what model start you have.

If i were to guess, I would think the nut is too tight for your new thicker strings, so when you hit the tremolo, it lets the string unload and then sticks as you release the tremolo.

Try a little graphite in the string slots. (Loosen, lift the string out and use a pencil to rub some in the slot and then drop the string back in and retune).

Read this:

Learn to set the guitar up yourself. It's really easy.

The American Standard comes set up for 9-42 gauge strings. You can safely go put to 10-46 gauge without too much trouble at the nut. If you went to 11s or 12s you will need some filing done on your guitar nut at the neck. Keep in mind that once you widen the slots you cannot go back to a smaller gauge without having tuning problems again.

All the previous posters' advice are relevant and I would try lubing the nut with graphite before doing anything else. Slide one string at a time out of the slot; take a sharp no. 2 pencil and score the slot with the pencil lead and replace the string. Repeat for each slot. It would help to know which strings are going out of tune. More than likely it's only one or two strings that are hanging up on the nut.

locking tuners.
saddles checked for burs.
nut cut for new strings.
you can buy graphite dust at pepboys type places.
its usually used for keyholes on locks.
make sure your new strings are stretched
out the way they should be before expecting to stay in tune
no matter what method you use.

Whenever you change string gauge you need to do a complete set up as the difference in gauge will affect the tension on the neck and consequently the relief or action on the neck necessitating a trussrod adjustment.Heavier strings usually mean getting the nut refiled as the thicker strings will often bind in the nut causing tuning problems especially with whammy use.The vibrato mechanism also has to be adjusted as string tension greatly affects the springs in the vibrato.Strings can also bind at the bridge and string trees and also where the string comes out of the vibrato before the bridge, you can use graphite or "nut sauce" to lubricate contact areas to free up the strings. The number of winds on the string post can also be a cause of tuning problems-the fewer the better. While changing strings be sure to pull on each string while tuning until it stays in tune after even an agressive bend and always change one string at a time as removing all the strings can cause big tuning problems.I hope this will be of help to you-good luck with it.

1) If you are properly attaching the strings to standard tuning pegs, locking tuners will NOT add any tuning stability.
2) Steps to remedy your problem
a) FOR SURE >>> Lubricate nut, saddles, and trees
b) If "a" does not address issue, consider using the very popular and easy "no float" setup. FWIW, my Strats (along with many others here in this forum) are set up with no float for this very reason. Do a search on "float" and you will get a ton of info.

just wondering, have you changed the strings since you had this setup done 2 months ago? You could just need a fresh set of strings...
