I have several answers:

1. The ones I own, because like every other foolish human, I spend time wishing for more/others instead of appreciating what I have.

2. The Squier Stratocasters. These wonderful instruments are always getting slammed. Well, no they are not as nice overall as a MIA or MIM etc., but for the money they can really turn out. Try building something from scratch that's better, or get something dismal like a "First Act."

3. The ones that famous "guitar gods" tear up during concerts. I never understood the mentality of someone who is so blessed and given so much by their instrument would smash it.

4. The ones in ugly colors.

I think that just about covers it. :)

I would have to say MIM series standard I have one and it fits me well. I am working towards a new american deluxe but you know what The only reason I am picking that guitar is as a reward guitar My goal is to learn a 100 songs front to back. I am on songs 47 and 48 now so I have a few years yet to go. But in all actuality they don't make the guitar I want. My stratocaster but with the new LINE 6 james tyler variax electronics. and maybe a new nicer neck something similiar to a fender american deluxe neck. their I did it wondered to a new topic damn..

It's really quite simple.
The most under-appreciated Strat is the...
the one that never gets played, duh ....

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The first series of American Standard from 1987. If it wasnt for this guitar, we'd all be playing Japanese strats. This is the series that saved Fender, and are slammed for having swimming pool routes.

If you ever get a chance to play one, you will notice they are slightly more resonant than the current models. They also had a much tastier pallette of colours too.

Legendary models came from this series, like the Plus and the Ultra- Fender Customshop was initiated and the rest is history.

I totally agree. I have a 70's Strat and a Strat Ultra from 1990. There is no comparison. One day we will look back on the reformulation of the Fender Music Corp. as a great thing, before the Custom shop started. To own one of these instruments is to own the highest quality Fender ever made for mass made guitars.

I did have the 1970 Strat refretted and nut replaced, but it still does not match the 1990 Strat Ultra. Those Lace sensors are to die for. But the solid build of the Ultra is even more impressive.

There are many, but the MIM Deluxe Powerhouse Strat and the Big Apple/American Double Fat Strat are my picks.

Alot of people still put down MIM Strats and this is completely groundless,I have 2 MIM Strats and a MI Tele and they all sound and play great or better in the case of the MIM Jimmie Vaughn.

Mid 80's MIJ Strats. However they are gaining popularity.

I definately agree Chet.

14 years ago when I was gigging with my MIJ 1984 62 reissue Strat, nobody even took a second glance at it.

I even wore comments from muso friends that it was a Pretender Fender!!

For some strange reason even then I knew that she was a keeper.

When I pull her out now and sit her up on stage next to my 2008 American Standard Strat, believe it or not...the MIJ now gets first looks.

That's what the vintage vibe does I suppose.
