easy 70's CBS era Strats. Lots of dudes who weren't even around back then like to slam them.

Yes there were some dogs (just like there are now) but they weren't all bad. I still own and play my 1974 Strat, it's never let me down. Not even in the gig heavy 80's.

My vote goes for the recent American Standards. No mods needed...sounds and plays great when set up properly.

+1 on the '70's Strat's - I have a '79 that after nearly 28 years of playing finally went in for some fretwork and a new nut. It now plays better than I ever had it; but think about that: 28 years and only fret work and a nut. That should say something about the quality. Yes, the neck pocket is a bit oversized, but you know, I haven't really noticed any problem with it.

I have several answers:

1. The ones I own, because like every other foolish human, I spend time wishing for more/others instead of appreciating what I have.

2. The Squier Stratocasters. These wonderful instruments are always getting slammed. Well, no they are not as nice overall as a MIA or MIM etc., but for the money they can really turn out. Try building something from scratch that's better, or get something dismal like a "First Act."

3. The ones that famous "guitar gods" tear up during concerts. I never understood the mentality of someone who is so blessed and given so much by their instrument would smash it.

4. The ones in ugly colors.

Mid 80's MIJ Strats. However they are gaining popularity.

I'll say the MIA Standard too Mike. I also agree with Chet. I own a 85 MIJ SSS and can't find anything I don't love about it, and I own several much more expensive ones! They just nailed that 85!! 8)

The first series of American Standard from 1987. If it wasnt for this guitar, we'd all be playing Japanese strats. This is the series that saved Fender, and are slammed for having swimming pool routes.

If you ever get a chance to play one, you will notice they are slightly more resonant than the current models. They also had a much tastier pallette of colours too.

Legendary models came from this series, like the Plus and the Ultra- Fender Customshop was initiated and the rest is history.

So true ..
ive dreamed of having a fender stratocaster for years .. when i was playing in my teenage years .

Now i have one and im still shopping for other online , wishing i had another one .when in fact i have my dream guitar ( not my dream color , but seriously , who cares ) . All i needed in my strat was a new pickups to give me my dream sound and i was done .

Gear acquisition syndrome totally s*u*c*k.. Im starting to cure it .. im not buying new gear and trying to enjoy the one i have .

I have a 1000 $ guitar and im online shopping for a new one .. when im only a bedroom player and i dont need another guitar.

:( your post made me realize this is so true that we dont enjoy what we have . :(

Thats bad .. owning stuff that make you want other stuff !! .. I guess the more you buy , the more you want to buy . theres a feelgood about buying stuff and it become an addiction . Its not only for music gear , but everything . IM pretty sure we are in a society that suffer a great shopping addiction and no one want to admit it ( lastest ipod , computer , car ) etc..

I have a Stratocaster USA hss with a duncan distortion in the bridge and locking tuners and yet im still unfulfill :( . My guitar is my dream guitar with the sound i want :( . Dunno why i spend time online shopping and checking the local ad for another one .

He who own little is little owned !!!!

i once read that somewhere and i find it so true .

Funny theres some dude who have only a little squier and a modleing amp and yet enjoy and cherrish it while other have 8 guitars , top notch amp and big pedalboard and still shop for more stuff .

I think that just about covers it. :)

Squier Standards and higher. Squiers get banged on a lot, but most are great instruments.

I love the standard squires but the nut spacing is too close together and my fingers get tangled. I have to put a standard strat nut on every one I get so I can play it. The Indonesian models from 2000 to 2004 are super guitars.

The quilted china 2004 I think is a great guitar. Top quality build and nice pickups if you like woody neck and twang bridge.
