So, I had a guitar school "gig" (recital) yesterday, outdoors, in 90 deg. F heat. I brought my Squier SE Strat instead of my American Standard because I wouldn't mind sweating on the cheaper guitar. I was plugged into the "crunch" channel on an amp, and when I tried to change the volume with my volume knob, it was basically constant until it went off.

I brought the Squier back and plugged it into my own amp, and same thing. I'd never noticed it before because I tend to keep the knob at 10. I plugged in my American Standard, and I could vary the volume all over the place. Is this to be expected of the Squier vs. No Load electronics, or might something be wrong with my Squier?

Sorry for the long question, and thanks!

Something must be wrong. Usually in time pots collect a lot of fuzz and dirt and need to be sprayed out with contact cleaner. The thing is, you normally know it's due because it will make a scratchy noise though the amp and usually cut the signal RIGHT out in spots.

You could try cleaning it out.

Sounds like the volume pot or wiring to it went bad or a connection is by-passing it. Very odd, but its not normal for any guitar, squier or not...

I'm not trying to be a wise-a** but have you ever turned a volume knob before?
What would make you think that this is normal?
Not much of a volume control if it doesn't control the volume imo.

Not an unreasonable question - one I asked myself. The situation was that I used the Squier mostly with my solid state amp, and the volume didn't make much difference, so I left it at 10. I just got a tube amp, but I played the newer American with that, until this recent event.

I'll get some contact spray and take a look at it sometime soon. It's not my main guitar, but I do take it on trips and such, and it would be nice to have it working.

The other reason for my question was that I knew about the special electronics in the American, so I wasn't really sure what the other volume knob should sound like in comparison

Thanks for the replies!
