in several issues of guitar player, there was a little device that caught my attention. it was a villex booster that replaces the socket on your strat. it is supposed to give a boost in positions 2 and 4

has anybody installed one? are they worth the price? good or bad- let's hear it......

It's supposed to give a 6db mid boost other than that I don't have any info on it and haven't seen any reviews. The best bet is to get on their website at www.villex.com or email them at ; tovillex@aol.com and see if you can find any user testimonials or if they have a money back guarantee if you're not satisfied. There may also be unbiased demos on Youtube.

phreddybee,

I have been considering the same thing for my Amer. Std. but I have some concern over it's impact on the Delta Tone "no-load" system. If you contact them you might check that out too if you have a standard.

I will watch the thread closely and hopefully we will get some good feedback. Comment about money back guarantee is right on, but doubt they support such an idea as sound is so subjective and they are running a business. I checked the web site and it appears to be a good company.

Hope everybody had a good holiday too.

Thanks for posting that link. I'm intrigued!

I'm a real sucker for this type of mod and am very tempted to pick one up and have a go.

The Delta tone (no-load) control wouldn't have an effect as all its just a 250k pot with the end of the carbon trace removed so the tone pot clicks out of the circuit at ten. The no-load tone control could possibly be what I'd use instead of a SPDT switch for the GMB/B (second booster down on their web site)

I also really like their jack plug with the switch hole. Very cool 8)

Andy

Andy,

I was trying to figure out if Villex is a UK company. I noted on the device itself it was stamped USA but the voice on the web was English. The do not talk about company origin on their web site. Do you know? If so, you might get a better read on it's performance than just the hype on their web site.

It just dawned on me that I often play through a Digi-Tech RP350 which has an option to switch pickups to HB in my tone options. Think I will check that out too.

The Villex "booster" is a passive device. Therefore it cannot "boost" anything. Instead, it just changes the resonant peak and rolloff of the pups giving the appearance of boost. I though about it but decided it wasn't worth the money. If you want "boost" you need to install the Clapton mid-boost (25 dB) or this one from GFS (10 dB).

I'm considering the GFS booster (Fully self contained and requires no other mods like the Clapton boost, plus its cheap.) but have not made up my mind.
