Well they weren't meant to be there in them days, though people jammed matchsticks into the switch to make em easily accessible.

Hendrix had his strats wires all kinds of ways. Inphase, out of phase, all 3 on all the time and various other strange variations.

That has become such an annoying saying lately. Yes most of the tone is in the hands and the artist's ability to play...but only after they have a gear setup that sets the foundation to that tone. A 335 through a spider solid state will sound different than a strat through a deluxe reverb, and furthermore your fingers cannot create fuzz/univibe/etc effects. If one is trying to sound like Hendrix then it should not be so crazy as to play a strat through a marshall through similar effects. Then it comes down to the fingers.

I agree completely with that sentiment. If you read my post again you'll see I said you can get close with just the gear.

For The Wind Cries Mary I recommend using just the neck pickup. In fact, that's what I use for most Hendrix tunes. Beyond that, using your hands to get all the little nuances well get you far closer to the Hendrix sound than any combination of amp and/or pedals. You can go on YouTube and find 10 different guys playing Purple Haze. Not one of them will be even close to nailing it. They are studying the wrong things.

That's the main reason for which CBS introduced the 5-way selector in 1977; to make such switching more stable and efficient.

I like very much the characteristic Strat "quack" provided by the positions 2 and 4 of the 5-way pickup selector. Particularly when you use a hum-cancelling RWRP pickup in the middle position.

The "quack" gained a burst of popularity with famous greats such as Robert Cray, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, David Gilmour, Robin Trower and Mark Knopfler. Over the years, it became a Fender trademark.

I think you need something like a univibe to get that little wing tone.
Jimi probably used an actual rotating speaker like a leslie, but you just need something that gets you in the ballpark.

After years of experimenting in the early days prior to his solo career, Hendrix's rig finally settled down to his many Strats, his many 100 watt Marshall Super Leads, the occasional Fender Showman, Vox Wah, Univox Univibe, sometimes a Leslie, Maestro Fuzzbox, Octavia Fuzzbox and the Arbiter Fuzz Face. It was later rumoured (and still is to this day) that he also liked and used the CryBaby Wah.

If you use the tools he used (or reasonable facsimiles) you should be able to get closer to his sound but you may never nail it completely as there is no accounting for personal touch, ie: hands.

1+ on the tone is the hands, not the guitar!

Yep.

I remember reading an interview w/the Nuge back in the day (might have actually been an EVH interview, but I digress, Ted was involved in the story) and VH and Ted were playing on the same bill. Ted walked up to Eddie to see where the "magic box" was. Suffice it to say, even though Ted was playing through Eddie's rig, he still sounded like Ted.

Looking back, while I've admired the tones of my heroes, I can't say I've ever wanted to emulate them. Because after all, even as Ted discovered, you can replicate all their gear or if you're lucky enough, play through the rig itself but you're still going to sound like you.
