So I changed the pickguard on my 50s Classic Strat and when I was done I could hear something moving around inside the control cavity. I take the pickguard off and find this:

What is this? How do I put it back?

Thanks!

Is it metal?

Possibly then a feeler gauge for setting up the guitar.

Yes, it's metal. I thought maybe it was some kind of sheilding thing that stuck magnetically to the back of the pickup, but there's only one, not three. I never heard it with the original pickguard on, but when I put the new one on I heard it moving arond inside the cavity.

I've had perhaps a half dozen of these guitars come across my bench over the years (one of them mine) but I've never seen anything like that under a pickguard.

Weird!

And you didn't take the neck off at all right? And did you get this guitar new? or Used?

I just took off my pick guard and one fell out as well!

:D It is a feeler gauge left behind by a setup tech.

Nope, neck stayed on, and yes, I bought it brand new. LOVE the guitar, too! A great purchase.

I can only presme that this is some kind of shim for the pickguard. Werid! I can't believe that both your techs made the same mistake of leaving their feeler gauges in the control cavity.

Kozy, a feeler gauge is used to measure small gaps. For us guitarists they are used to check neck relief.

Check out the Fender Set up guide for instructions as to how this is done.

At least it's better than that "Silica Gel" brand chewing gum I usually get. That stuff tastes awful.
