I have small hands too and they're full of arthritis or some other not yet diagnosed problem but I still don't have a problem with the neck but if you must change it ,the standard MIM neck as has been suggested should be very comfortable for you.BTW what gauge strings do you use?Whereas I have small hands and do a lot of aggressive bending I use D'Addario 8-38s and they are great. You get great tone from them and it takes very little effort to fret a note or a chord. So maybe if you were to try a lighter gauge string with your J.V. they just might work and that would be a much easier and cheaper fix than buying a new neck.

Sell it or trade it and get exactly what you want. A guitar that causes hand pain kinda defeats the whole purpose. The perfect guitar for you should make you want to play more...not less.

I got this 1997 Jimmie Vaughan Strat a couple weeks ago. I love the sound, but I have not gotten used to the soft V neck.

If Strats are your gig, and before you start putting $$'s into after-market parts and labor, find an Artist Series Clapton and see if the neck profile suits you. Do that first, then get back to us and we'll talk further.

There was a used Clapton Strat at the store today in perfect condition. My boss let me play it for about half an hour before I clocked it. It's not the best neck for my style (it would be better for people who prefer thinner strings, like .9s or .10s), but it did feel very, very nice. I like the fact that it has 22 frets and the neck pocket is still normal sized.

It's one of that group in the so called 'vintage' category which Fender strings with 10's because that's the way those guitar were originally equipped. 9's are Fenders generic. I've gone to 9.5's on my Gilmour and Clapton, and I put a Gilmour set on my VG for a bit more wack on the low end. I'm waiting on my VHR to see how that one will feel before considering a change. The neck's a bit different. Closer to the Clapton in feel.

In the matter of strings I recommend Premier Guitar, July 2010 pg 60:

Problem with most signature strats is the cost. While I'd love to have an SRV strat, I'm not about to fork over almost $2k for it. Used are going for around $1200. Still not going to do it! All I really want is the neck from it anyway...

There's someone selling a JV strat by me for $400 OBO with case, but I just bought another guitar and some parts to change it up some, so I guess I'll have to pass on it.

My God am I jaded? All I can see is don't want a mexican neck, it must be MIA. Even a paltry generic one.

No accounting for taste I suppose.

I would have been able to get a white JV Strat brand new from musician's friend if I had just gotten up earlier. I had the money back then and everything. They had just sold out by the time noon came around. Gives a new meaning to "you snooze you lose".

Yeah that's why I keep a close eye on craigslist. If it's a good price, it doesn't last very long.

I had a chance at a SRV strat for $800. I didn't have the money but I should of done everything in my power to get it. I wish I'd tried harder on that deal...
