Looking at a used Road House Strat... I see on the Fender site that these are now MIM, but the one I'm looking at says Made in USA. It is a 1998 model... did these used to be MIA?

Also, this one has a rosewood fret board... now, they only are available in maple. Did this change somewhere along the way?

Finally, if this is indeed a Roadhouse model, does anyone know if the specs for the USA model are the same as the current MIM's (texas special pickups, 9.5 radius, etc)?

ALso, anyone know if this 1998 model would have rolled fingerboard edges?

Yes - there was a USA model named the Roadhouse Strat back in the 1990s - I believe it ran from circa 1996 (maybe mid/late 1995) until July 2000. It was basically an American Standard Strat of the day with Texas Special pickups instead of the typical American Standard pickups. They came in some unique colors (like teal) plus they had pearloid or tortoise shell pickguards (depending on the color) and I believe they had a regular tone pot for the middle/bridge pickups instead of a TBX tone control (or the later Delta Tone). However, my memory is hazy and they might have had vintage wiring instead (tone for neck, tone for middle, and no tone for the bridge pickup).

There was also a USA-made Lone Star Strat - same as the Roadhouse but it had the HSS pickups that were a Duncan Pearly Gates Plus and 2 Texas Specials. The third one of this series (which was called the "Hot Rodded American Standard" series) was the Big Apple Strat, which had an HH pickup configuration (with a Duncan Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge and a '59 in the neck position).

Since these were essentially the same as the American Standards except for the pickups they would not have rolled fingerboard edges.

The Roadhouse was replaced in July 2000 by the "American Series Texas Special Strat" which was the American Series (with all the upgrades including rolled fingerboard edges) and the Texas Special pickups. The Lone Star became the "American Series Texas Special Fat Strat" and the Big Apple became the "American Series Double Fat Strat". All 3 of these guitars were discontinued in July 2003; the "American Series Texas Special Fat Strat" became the "American HSS Strat" and the pickups changed to Tex-Mex single coils and a Fender humbucker with the S-1 switch and the "American Series Double Fat Strat" became the "American HH Strat" with Fender humbuckers and S-1 switching. I used to have a Fender Frontline from that era (the January 2004 Frontline) that showed a replacement for the "American Series Texas Special Strat" with 3 Tex-Mex pickups, but I don't think that guitar was ever released. I think that guitar was simply dropped in July 2003.

Both the Lonestar and Roadhouse are back, this time as a part of the Mexico Deluxe Series.

IMO, only the Big Apple is missing.

The American Standard HSS of 2008 is essentially an American HSS Strat without the S-1 switch, but with some juicy upgrades:

- a 2-point vintage-style bridge with improved bent-steel saddles and a copper-infused high-mass block for increased resonance and sustain.

- an improved neck treatment, tinted for a richer presentation, with the maple or rosewood fingerboard buffed to a high gloss. The back of the neck still has that silky satin finish.

- a thinner finish undercoat that lets the body breathe and improves resonance.

- a Fender-exclusive SKB molded case with TSA locks.

True - I didn't carry the timeline forward because the OP was interested in the original USA Roadhouse model - that model was never updated and renamed after 2003. The Big Apple/Double Fat/HH Strat died out in 2006. Of these "Hot Rodded" guitars that debuted in 1996 only the HSS carried forward through the 2008 update to the "revised" American Standards.

Several models have had the metal roller nut; here's a list with approximate dates:

Strat Plus - Wilkinson nut 1987-1993, LSR nut 1993-end of model (1998/99)
Strat Plus Deluxe - Wilkinson nut 1987-1993, LSR nut 1993-end of model (1998/99)
Strat Ultra - Wilkinson nut 1991-1993, LSR nut 1993-end of model (1998/99)
Jeff Beck Strat - Wilkinson nut 1990-2000, LSR nut 2001 - current
Amercian Deluxe Fat Strat (version 1) - LSR nut 1998-2003
American Deluxe HSS Strat (version 2) - LSR nut 2004 - 2009
American Deluxe HSS Strat (version 3) - LSR nut 2010 - current

There were actually 2 Wilkinson nuts - these were the wider ones (about the same width as a Floyd Rose nut); the early ones (1987-1988) had double rollers for the 3 plain strings and a single roller for the 3 wound strings; starting sometime in 1988 they had double rollers for all 6 strings.

The LSR nut replaced the Wilkinson some time during 1993; it is the thinner one (just a little widerthan a standard nut) with ball-bearing rollers.

The Strat Ultra didn't come out until 1991 and it had a chrome plated Wilkinson nut until the LSR replaced it.

The Beck used the early style Wilkinson nut for many years because that is what Jeff like the best. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think it switched to the LSR until it was revised in 2001.

The first version of the American Deluxe Fat Strat only had the LSR nut if it had the locking trem circa 1998; at some point they put the LSR nut on all of them and they have continued to use them. You will occasionally still see an HSS American Deluxe with a regular nut - one assumes these are either production line goofs or for some reason Fender is temporarily out of the roller nuts and they use regular ones.

EDIT: Actually I have found that at some time between 1993 and 1996 Fender did change the Jeff Beck to the LSR nut - just not sure exactly when that happened.

I don't think that Fender started doing that until about '00 or '01.

Rolled-edge necks came into the scene with the introduction of the American Deluxe series in 1998. This feature was adopted on the American Series and a couple of signature & Custom Shop models two years later.

yep, the original Roadhouse Strat's were MIA. Originally they were rosewood fretboards. When they switched to Mexico production, they became maple fretboards. Wish they didn't do that. I like the look of the Lonestar which is basically the same guitar except it has a HSS configuration with the Rosewood. I bought a Lonestar and hated the humbucker. So I traded it for a Roadhouse. After a while, I missed the rosewood, so I sold the neck and swapped it for a Lonestar neck. Worked out perfectly. The MIA Roadhouses are nice guitars if you can find them, but they are not much more than an American Standard with Texas Specials.......

Well this is a zombie thread - I don't think the Blacktops were out when chromeface posted that in June 2010. I thought the blacktops came out a bit later that year.
