Well, I never touched the body other than to position parts on it and take measurements, so I'm a bit confused by your comments :?: .

The store I bought this at is a pretty well known on-line guitar shop that sells some fairly well received budget line guitar gear, so its not like this guy routed it out in his basement.

In fact I bought my kids each an electric guitar and amp package last Christmas from Rondo in addition to family and friends purchasing guitars there. These items have no problem.

I had no reason to belive that this body would be the distaster it ended up being. And if this body had been advertised as needing carpentry, I'd be happy to have it as is.

I'm trying to figure out what you're refering to...

To be fair, we had to save that guitar because of the value imparted to it by its celebrity original owner...

What celebrity owner? You're making us way too curious.

Oh - actually, I mistook which other guitar with new wood inserted in the middle and the trem cavity re-routed you were talking about. How self-centered of me...

For a minute there I thought you were talking about the burnt guitar formerly owned by Nikininja - a celebrity if ever there was one!

My mistake - I feel completely silly now.

Nikininja's Strat thread made him famous if he wasn't famous already with his Rock Icon status! That goes to show that you can make a great guitar out of Ashes, not just Ash! That was a great thread you did. But I was referring to the newer thread currently out there....

Did you guys notice that if you go to the guys webpage and click on the strat body and look at the photos of the back of the guitar, it is routed crappy like that in the pics too. So I'm guessing all his bodies are routed like that.

Kurt at Rondo finally agreed to take the body back for a full refund incl. shipping. I called American Express and they froze the funds pending investigation (which I will halt once the refund is confirmed). Works out best this way -- Now I can go get a body I can use. Thanks to Ceri for the good advice. And thanks to Kurt at Rondo (if he's reading this) for the understanding 8).

Now if any of you carpentry studs want an ash almost-strat body. Y'all know where to buy one

Yeah not to Rondo music.

After the way you were treated I wouldn't even buy strings there.

One thing. I always thought mouse ears were to allow for movement, to better align the neck to body. Allowing the up down movement to better suit string to neck edges. Without significantly moving the neck forwards/backwards out of the pocket.

All I know about mouse ears comes from Ron Kirn's brilliant guitar building website. He can say it better than me, from the fifth photo down on this page:

http://www.ronkirn.com/tutorial/strat_tutorial7.htm

BTW: on the previous page on that site check out how he rebates his neck, back and jack plates into the lacquer. Holy Camole, Batman!

I was a tongue in cheek comment for sure. It is funny -- his tone after I contacted AmEx totally changed. He went from being a hard-arse to uber-friendly.

It's a bummer because that wood grain looked good -- the finish I have planned was gonna pop on that slab.

So I re-group..

Gonna need another body -- thinking about a mighty-mite unfinished.

Got this poly-urethene covered neck. Not sure I want to completely strip it for fear I might damage something. But I want a nice amber nitro look. Can this be sanded and nitro-finished with the poly underneath?

You can just spray tinted cellulose ontop of the urethane, on that neck. It will bond to urethane ok.

Best of both worlds then. Easily aged topcoat, bulletproof undercoat.

Awesome -- Thanks!

Just a little sanding over that Poly to give it something to grab to should OK then, I'm thinking?

As long as it definitely is urethane and not polyester, you should be fine. The chemical reaction of the cellulose will bond to the urethane. Fender's American Vintage Reissue guitars have a polyurethane undercoat. They spray cellulose ontop of that. I would only go lightly with the sanding if I were you.
Ceri and Twelvebar are far more experienced with that stuff than I.
