Hi Kozy

If it OK with you, have a few questions about how to apply a decal on to my headstock.

Did you put the decal straight on to the “unfinished” head stock or was there a sealer coat or a first lacquer coat on there first? And did it leave any kind of water mark?

I've made a decal but I'm in two minds as to whether or not to put it on mine...

Cheers! :D

Andy,

Glad I can help you for once  ..

I applied sanding sealer (2-3 mist coats) first to the neck. I wanted it smooth so I lightly sanded and steel wooled the headstock, then applied the decal (it took a couple tries to get it just right so make sure you have spare decals). I applied the neck tint over the decal and about multiple coats of lacquer over all of that.

Once the decal dried for a few days it was nicely secured to the headstock. With the neck tint application the decal "settled" even further on the wood. With the lacquering, you'd be best served to mist on the first couple coats and let it cure between few good hours and overnight, so the decal does not raise. The next day mist 1-2 coat of lacquer waiting an hour between coats. Further on, apply 1-2 coats each thicker than the last. With that, wait overnight for your last coat, which should be applied glossy. In the end you should have applied 6-8 lacquer coats

Good luck -- it should go well. Let us all see how it winds up :)

Thanks Kozy, Very helpfull indeed! :D

I was hoping to avoid using spray lacquers and just slap a few coats of oil over the top. Ive printed of one sheet of A4 laser printer decal paper with ten copies of my decal. Not sure if the oil finish will be decal friendly and i don't want to have to re-do my headstock this late in the build.

I might wait until i start another poject which will have a nitro finish and whip the tunners off and put it on then...can't decide. :?

Oh well, Thanks again Kozy mate!

Andy

Not sure about the oil finishes, it might work, but I'd take it slow so the decal does not lift. You could test it out on strip of wood (?). If all else fails just laquer on the headstock only and oil the rest of the neck...

A test piece sounds like a good way to go. I've already got a few coats of oil on the headstock so I think i'll carry on without the decal for now and do a few test pieces and see how they turn out. I can always put the decal on after its all finished and put together with no real hassle.

Thanks again!

Oooh, hows your friend coming on with his mahogany strat? I take it you saw Impulse7's thread. Should be a good one. :D

My friend hasn't started on his body yet, The unfinished mahogany body he's getting is still on order. Impulse7's project looks like it should be a winner :D

Did some more sanding on mine. Looks pretty good. Just waiting for a nice weather day to get some more spraying done

I know it's been a while since I posted any progress on the project. (thanks for hanging in there w/me :D ) I have been working on the body -- sanding, sealing, sanding, waiting for nice weather, sealing, sanding, sealing, etc -- so it's been very boring..

I think I have it pretty filled, sealed and sanded -- ready for the vintage blonde lacquer -- I'm hoping to apply that tomorrow with the top coats of clear lacquer going on the next day.

Attached is a photo of the body with the neck, which is finished -- It's cured and sanded nice and smooth.

BTW, with the sealer on the body, it closely resembles a finished product -- it's difficult not going ahead and installing all the electronics/hardware on this thing. But I gotta stay with the blonde plan :)

Howdy-Do!

I've finally got something worth showing!!

Over the last couple days, I've spray tinted and lacquered the body. The weather was cooperateive so father Kozy and I decided to give it a go. We applied the tint over at his house. Image

Looked real nice going on. Dried maybe a bit heavier than I expected, but I must say, I love the look. Here's a photo from last night next to the neck...

Image

Today, I had another great weather day so I decided to spray the clear gloss lacquer. Put on an entire can, about 2-3 mist coats and 4-6 heavier coats. It shines :D

Image

Now I know what some of you may be thinking -- but this grain shows through nice in real life. Looks like a classic fender blonde finish.

Although there are a couple small "defects", it came out pretty nice, for my first attempt at an ash guitar. And since I will be playing it, the flaws should blend in with the wear... Time for a sip.

Now we wait... 30 days... 8)

Kozy

One of my favourite finishes mate. Love that translucent white. Like the Mary Kaye strats.

I'm sure I'll get antsy in a few days. This thing is gonna have to sit for a while, I can tell. The lacquer looks like melted butter :D

No custom body... This one gave me a run for my money  I'm just glad I could get it to a point where the finish can cure. I reckon to have him together by Thanksgiving. :D

Dumb me, I was getting this build confused with Andy's! Sorry about that. Where did you get the paint and paint code for shooting this?
