Sounds feasible!

I would wait as long as possible before worrying about removing that finish off the frets. The longer you wait, the better cured it will be. Then when the time comes mask it like I did on this thread but using the blue masking tape:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... c&start=30

And then cut the tape off the frets and then either scrape the tops or use a flat sanding board to take the finish off. I have used a scraping tool to do the ones I have refinished.

I am sure Mr. C. will have an idea too, if he is not on some covert activities in a strange foreign country.

An awesome approach, to be sure 8)

So if you understand you correctly, Xhefri -- I should go ahead with this process after the final lacquering?

Ah, I guess i missed something. I thought you were done with both stain and lacquer. Ya you could wait and do it all at one time. That is what I do, But them maybe some other people have some opinions. I have heard it said that there is wisdom in a multitude of counselors! I let the lacquer cure for a good time and then do this. When you cut the tape on each side of the fret, and the lacquer is hardened really well, sometimes it will pop off the edge with a slight scrape. Then other times it takes some meticulous scraping on edges. I mentioned to Mr. C that I have a two Strats that are NOS and still have lacquer on top the frets, and they came that way from the factory. So either they missed a step or...

Here's what I did (I'm an impatient little f-er :D )...

Just as a little test, grabbed a tiny wad, smaller than a pea, of very fine steel wool, and clutched it tight between the thumb and index finger, and polished the tint off the frets. It sounds more cumbersome than it really is. Worked so well, I did the whole neck in about a half hour.

After that, I sprayed the entire neck in gloss lacquer, about 5-6 mist coats. Gonna see how that decal reacts -- if everything goes well, I'll put 2-3 med wet coats on tomorrow.

:)

EDIT: I plan to do the tape method Xhefri covered after the final lacquer is cured...

Happy Labor Day!

Applied the lacquer -- approx 3/4 can of glossy clear Deft. It's finished and will now be set aside for curing.

Image

Now it's back on the body. Kozy Sr. grain filled the top until he started having an alergic reation to the sanding residue :( . So I'm back on grain filling duty. Here's where we are at ...

Image

As you can see the white grain fill has taken up the deep grains. It pretty smooth  . If I have time after my honey-do list today, I may apply some filler on the back and sides.

Ha! Just looked in on this thread. Was about to add my hapethworth (it means "half penny worth" - but I think you say "two cents' worth" where you are: that's inflation for you! ) - when I read the above and saw you were done already. Looks great in the pic so... carry on!

:D - C

Hey Koz,

Thought I'd do the rounds on the build thread, hows it coming along? Grain filling done yet?

Howdy Dan 8) -- I'd say so. I have been working with this stuff for a week or so. Got to the point that I literally had to work the filler into the grain with my fingers, in order for it to fill properly. Sanding is almost done -- got the sides yet to finish. I'll get some photos this afternoon to let you all see. It's been a process, I must say. This product is not all that easy to work with. One thing I have noticed is a somewhat hazy residue on the sanded, filled surface of the body when dry. Hoping a couple good coats of sealer will eliminate that.
:D

Hi Kozy!

Firstly, I hope Kozy Sr is Ok and the reation to the sanding residue is nothing too serious.

Secondly, though I'm not a fan of the big 70's style headstocks, your neck and decal look fantastic! 8)

You've done a grand job there man!

Andy

Thanks a lot Andy -- I really appreciate you checking up and asking about my pop. 8) . He's doing A-OK. I think the sanding dust, more than anything got to him. But it was really my job anyway . Kozy Sr. has assured me he wants in on some lacquering action (guess he wants to see if he out-do that neck finishing job :D ). But first I had to finish that darn grain fill...

This is the step I dreaded the most which is the reason I tried to work around it. All-in-all, it's probably what set me back the most on this project. But I think I've finally got the body pretty well filled...

Image

BTW, Andy -- I gotta tell you, the work you are doing on your project is making mine look like a high school wood shop job.... ...

My next move is some nice coats of sealer, and then it's onto the next chapter...

The final lacquer stages:

Reranch Fender Blonde (to make those Bill Lawrence Pups POP!), followed by some clear nitro lacqer top coats...

:D

Hi Kozy,

No worries man! I'm glad to hear Kozy Sr is alright. :D

Not at all. The type of finishing your working through here is something I have tried and failed miserably at! I have huge respect for guys like Ceri, Kong, Twelvebar and your good self who can do this sort of stuff.

Kudos to you Sir. 8)

I shall be taking notes from you on this one. And I'll be tapping you up for some tips on making my decal once Me, Randel and Mrs Bighair finally decide on the design!

Cheers!

Andy
