This is a cool thread. I'm looking forward to the finished project. Maybe I should post my project once I get all the pieces I need. I'm going to something very, very odd. I'm building a Cigar Box electric guitar. I want it to be as gritty as it can get!

Hello all!

Got the bridge installed. Afterwards I measure the distance to the D and E saddle and it's right on. Chewing my knuckles a bit because my loaded pick guard does not fit just right -- looks like I'll have to take a dremel tool to the area at the neck joint.

Below is a photo w/ another pickguard I had lying around which is snug but it does fit...

I'm thinking about throwing a set of strings on this puppy w/o the electrics to see how she plays.... 8)

Awesome! Let's see what it looks like in its raw condition! Any chance you can post a video/audio clip?

Here the guitar strung up next our pet cat, magpie. Don't have video and w/o pups I can't get a respectable recording.

But it plays just fine. I didnt do anything but eye-ball the saddles and pop a set of custom lites on the guitar (let's call him Frank for now). It's pretty dang in tune and the action's just about right 8)

Hows it feel playing the nude strat? Will be much better once you've got the finish on but it's a great feeling, stringing it up for the first time aint it :)

Dan, I'm gonna give this thing the kind of finish that will make it look like it was beamed in from the middle of the last century. If it works out it'll have the aged look of one of grandma's end-tables...

The thing about playing the strat nude is the open cavities amplify the sound. It's a treat, and part of me doesnt want to take the strings off.

Next step -- ordering the finishing products from ReRanch :D

Hello All,

Finally got to a point where I can work a bit on the project. On the matter of buying the grain filler and sanding sealer, I've run into a couple of points for discussion..

It sure is hard to find an oil based grain filler here in town :? . Happily there is a store about 20 minutes from home that has the Bartley's Pore-O-Pac oil based grain filler. So I will be picking this up on Sunday :)

Question (for Ceri, Kong, Andy...) on the sanding sealer: Do y'all think it's satisfactory to use an aerosol spray can type (such as the Deft Laquer Sanding Sealer) or should I be going with the brush on variety?

As always you guys are smartest gents in this topic area -- look forward to your take on this 8).

BTW, great stories on the other threads... It's good to see some entertaining action back on the forum :D

Hi Kozy: first, that Strat is looking beautiful! Congrats on how it's coming out so far. Neat.

Really, the only important thing is to use the same type of finish throughout the process. So if you start with nitrocellulose it is best to continue with it all the way to the end. Sounds like that is your plan, so - good!

I'd certainly go for aerosol over brush if possible. Much easier. Spray three or four thin (thin) coats of sanding sealer, leave it to dry 24 hours then sand it flat with something around P300 paper. If you can get it completely flat first time round - job done. That is all the sanding sealer stage is there for. If there are some dips, dents and pore marks after sanding, spray another two or three coats, leave to dry and sand again.

You just continue with that process till you have a completely smooth surface to put your top coats onto. Sanding sealer is cheaper and contains more solids so it builds faster, so you can achieve a perfectly flat surface quicker and more cost effectively than by using top lacquer for the same purpose.

That is the only reason we bother with the sealer stage at all.

Best of luck with it - though I don't think you need luck. You're doing great! :D

Cheers - C

Hi Kozy!

When it come to finishing, personally I prefer the look of "Nude" guitars.... especially ones with a nice natural finish.... there's just something about rubbing oil on a nude body... :D

And I'm pretty crap at spray finishing and need lots more practice so if its Ok with you I'll keep my gob shut and learn a bit from you on this one!

Enjoy!

Andy

Decided to go back and take look at Kong's Drowned Strat thread to get a feel for applying the grain filler, since we all know what he had to work through with his trem cavity and hammer claw divots...

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... c&start=45

What I saw was a great job by Kong in sanding and smoothing out that body. With Kong's decision to go with a solid metallic color he did not have to worry about the grain showing thru the lacquer. As expected the grain filler does show in patches. Makes me wonder about the workability of the filler product and how it could ultimately affect the final finish. Brings up the important question:

Could I potentially get away with applying additional multiple coats of sanding sealer in lieu of grain filler for the purpose of preserving that fine looking grain?

If not, Wondering: What's the overall feeling of oil versus water based grain fillers?
