Standards are the basis for the model. Signature models usually have the artists preference in mind when it comes to electronics, wiring configuration, tuning machines, tremolo, finish, etc. The deluxe series has different electronics (S-1 Switching, very cool), locking tuners, special neck profile, abalone inlays, and a newer tremolo system. You should expect more when the cost goes up.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll buy a standard and buy it better pickups in a future!

Well its not just the pickups are different, alot of the higher models have different neck shapes, contours, and other specs that aren't easily changed. So I would play a couple to see what you like.

Since it seems you are hunting for what to buy, I would start at the Products page for the Strats, and begin comparing features to a typical model like the American Standard Strat. You will see for instance that the American Deluxe has some different main components, and some 'upgrades', but the pickups are different, so unless you like the sound of N3 noiseless PUPs vs Am Stndrd PUPS, it would not be a 'better' choice.

The MIM Standards have some slightly different features, and the PUPs are different from the Americans; the Classics have features & different PUPS, etc. etc. etc.

All the while keep another web page open to a site like Guitar Center and compare prices, just to get an idea of what's what. Be aware their prices are high though.

Sooner or later, find a good local store, 'cause the ideal way to figure out what YOU want is to A/B (try) the ones you think you might like...before or after the above homework.

I recommend starting with the American Standard - tough to beat.
