As this is entirely hidden when playing, to whom does this look cool?
To the audience when you pick up the guitar to play with your teeth...

Utter crap.
The only possible benefit is that some find it easier to change strings with it off. Some have trouble with thier shirts getting caught in the springs. Take it off if you want, but know that IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IN THE TONE OR SUSTAIN OF YOURGUITAR.

Gotta agree here. I'd be more inclined to modify the plate by making a long slot out of the 6 holes. This way the strings are easier to access and
you don't risk getting your shirt caught in the springs.

Bottom line is that there is no bottom line. Some people leave them on and some people leave them off. I leave mine on so my belt buckle doesn't drag across the springs and make them go "krraaang!".

Welcome, by the way. A search will show this topic gets discussed often. Here are some samples. Have fun.

That's the way it is on my '09 MIM Strat, one long slot.

I think the 6 screws could be re-designed to have only two (possibly larger) instead. It is a pain to unscrew all six, I just keep 2 in at opposite corners, they (fender) would save on costs slightly too.

That's what has kept me from purchasing a tortoise shell cover to match the pickguard, or change the neck plate to gold since all the rest of the hardware is gold...
