That would be a great idea if they could make it affordable for we poor mortals but I imagine that it would be practically unobtainable if the replicated every little scratch and ding.If they could produce one just made to the body and hardware specs I could live with that and would most likely pick one up if the price wasn't through the stratosphere.

Was it a '56 or a 58' strat? I can't remember. Think it was a 56, they have the 1956 light relics, which would be pretty close, but they cost a lot.

I'm kinda surprised they haven't made a Brownie...after all that was the "Layla" guitar, one of the anthems of rock'n'roll....and he didn't piece it together like that other mongrel...what was it called....Blackie?

Brownie is a 56, Serial number 12073. It was used for Layla, and was benched in 71 for "Blackie".

A "Brownie" replica would be pretty nice, especially in its modern "signature" version with the current Clapton specs.

The only problem is to obtain EC's authorization in order to build a tobacco sunburst Clapton Strat.

C'mon guys, this isn't "rocket surgery". Get yourself a CIJ ST54-VSP in 2TSB then do this to it......

......And voilá -- instant "Brownie" relic!

If that's what it takes to make a "Brownie", I feel kinda sorry for Brownie.

So it was Brownie that Layla was recorded on, eh?
I remember reading about Brownie but don't recall reading that it was used for the famous song.

As I recollect, the entire album was recorded with Brownie (through a tweed Champ Amp). But as someone has mentioned, Brownie was actually a composite instrument assembled from the parts of several different '50s-era Strats.

Did you mean "Blackie", mister Retrofake?

Blackie was the composite Strat, not Brownie!

Brownie is a tobacco sunburst '56 Strat which was purchased by EC at London's Sound City during a "Cream" tour in May 7, 1967 for $400.

Brownie is pictured on the back of the Layla album along with some other stuff, and in several pictures inside.I think Eric used it for all of the songs and Duane Allman used a Les Paul, supposedly playing through Champs.
One time somebody asked Duane who played what part on the song Layla,he said "I play a Gibson and Eric plays a Fender, the Fender is bright and sparkly and the Gibson is a full tilt screech...if you can tell a Gibson from a Fender you know who plays what...if you can't,just hallucinate man."....something to that effect...typical Skydog answer. 8)

Thkx for the answers guys...

:D Brownie is a ´´56 that Clapton bought for approx 400 bucks...it was purchased by Paul Allen , ex #2 of Microsoft and is on tour presently in Phoenix.

I´m just surprised that after cloning, some celeb guitars and even Blackie that Fender hasn´t gone for the ¨Layla¨ axe .
It´´s probably one of the most famous after some of Hendrix´s machines. Let´s hope that someone at Fender is reading the forum.

Lord knows they would stand to sell a ton! :D

( as for beating the crap out of your ´´56 relic.....all i can say is ....oooouch..!!)

Do you know where at in Phoenix? I would like to check it out.

I drove by the Musical Instruments Museum last night on my way out to buy telecaster parts off Craigslist.

What it was used on one album? I'd think it's nowhere near as well known or as iconic a guitar as the black strat. Especially outside of guitar playing circles.
