Honestly, it doesn't bother me, i figure that you will get used to anything provided you play it enough.

I agree.

Not too sure I like HUGE jumbo frets. But I personally prefer med Jumbo. The only reason I can really think of is just that it feels right for me.

BTW Niki, I just friended you on your Myspace page. Nice guitar tones man.

That's one of the primary reasons I took to building my own guitars. That, and I don't care for the "uni-rout" swimming pools under the pickguard, 22-fret necks, two-point trems, and all the rest of the recent "player-inspired enhancements".

That said, I think it's a good thing that FMIC offers the flatter boards with jumbos since a lot of the younger players prefer them, especially those who switch regularly from Gibson to Fender instruments and back again.

Arjay
That's the first thing my son said when he picked up the '59,that the neck felt more like a Gibson...so he's gigging with it now and I'm playing the '57 and '62...the '62 HR has what they call medium jumbos I think and they feel fine to me.
I really didn't care for the swimming pool route on my AS Strats either, and the reissues suit me much better.

I'm your basic "Luddite" when it comes to Fenders, RS.

To me, Stratocaster development reached its paradigm with the introduction of custom colors and five-way switching.

I have three guitars with three different frets sizes. My old Ventura has vintage frets that have been crowned and leveled, the strat has med jumbo, and the ESP has Extra Jumbo.

I can't say I have any preference, except maybe towards the almost worn flat to the fretboard and leveled and crowned vintage on my Ventura. The guitar plays so fast, I can actually get ahead of myself and mess up....I love it

It really is a matter of what you are used to and what your preference is. I can play about the same speed on all my guitars, but my short fingers and oversized palms, definately feel at home on the 24.75 scale Ventura with leveled and crowned vintage frets. The problem is with vintage frets is once they have been leveled and crowned, that is it. With extra jumbos, I am sure you could level and crown them a few times before replacement. However, since I bought my strat and had the Ventura leveled and crowned, I find my esp with extra jumbos and 25' scale a little harder to play. However, when the ESP was my main "go to" guitar, I did not notice this.

so like most things in life, each type has its pro's and con's. I find the med jumbos on the strat to be a very happy medium.

Just a thought. I think string gauge has a lot to do with what size frets work best. I use 11 gauge strings, standard tuning, on my vintage "74 Strat. which was re-fretted with jumbo frets. Works great for bending strings playing blues etc. I Also have a Telecaster that has smaller vintage frets that I string with smaller gauge strings. This set-up works great for getting those twangy country type sounds. I have a MIJ Squire Strat that has vintage frets. I tried putting 11 guage strings on. It feels stiff as a board. Just feels like there's nothing there to push against when bending notes. Just my 2 cents worth.

This is just my own personal opinion...and please forgive me if I add anything terribly redundant...

"Jumbo frets...why do you play 'em?"

Strats...why do you play one instead of a Tele or a LP? Why do some players prefer one fretboard radius or pickup configuration or another? Why electric instead of an acoustic? Why 8 gauge strings instead of 9's or 10's? Why a Marshall amp over a Fender or a Peavey? Why do you want that blue guitar instead of a red or a black one? Why a medium pick over a thin or finger picking?

If you haven't guessed by now, the simple answer is "personal preference"...because that is what -I- like and what I prefer. Not trying to be rude here but I really don't understand why some people feel the need to make it any more complicated than that...

If a person likes jumbo frets over something else, that's what they should play...doesn't need to be rocket science.

Personally, I am always amazed when anyone resurrects a thread that's 2+ years old.

If you're looking for an answer you usually need to ask a question to get it. I've been kicking around whether to get jumbo or medium jumbo frets on my next guitar for about three weeks. Everyone's opinions and experiences help, even if they're two years old. What has surprised me is how many people prefer jumbo's.

Well, again I'm not trying to be rude here...but why would other people's preference have any effect what -you- like or dislike? Sorry...I just don't get that. To me it seems that whatever I like (or don't like) on -my- instruments, shouldn't have ANY bearing on what you like (beyond any sense of coincidence). I don't have a problem with "asking questions" but in such a case, one would thing the best approach would be to play a few different instruments with various size fret and see what -you- like.

Lemme try this a different way; from time to time I've read about scalloped fretboards on the internet. It may be of marginal interest to "read about it" but the truth is, I've played a few instruments with scalloped fretboards...I do NOT like them. It really doesn't matter how many people on internet forums swear by them or claim they make them play faster....-I- do not like them. How do I know this? Because some yabba-wub on an internet forum said so? -No-...I know because I've played a few to find out.

Again, in my mind at least, such things are about personal taste and personal preference. You're not going to find out what feels good to your hands and fingers on an internet forum...the -ONLY- way (that I know of at least) is to play a few and see what you prefer...

Again I just don't get why people need to make it any more complicated than that - either ya like them or ya don't...and the only way to find that out is to play a few and decide for yourself.
