so i use my squier standard stratocaster alot, and it is begining to relic and the neck is really really smooth and its is really nice to play, even compared ot my gibson sg standard. But when i plug it into an amp it sounds terrible....

so could anyone suggest any not too pricy pickups which i could put into this guitar which can do nice blues but also rock....

comments much appreciated :)

First you would have to define the terms terrible and nice. Tone is subjective.
Also I hear texas specials do a nice blues sound.

if i were to change pickups would i need to also change the electronics? and what would be recommended to replace it with?

My Squier Affinity Strat is my main guitar. I love the neck, which is the main reason I play it so much. But I thought the pickups could be better so I replaced them with Texas Specials since I play mostly blues and rock. They're my favorite pickups on any Strat, I really like how responsive they are. They have more mid range and bass than vintage pickups, which to me is a good thing.

Tex Mex pickups are similar (they're also overwound), but they have a brighter tone. To be honest I like them a lot too and if I bought a guitar with Tex Mex pickups I wouldn't change them. And I think they're among the best for the price.

In my Squier I changed out the entire pickguard assembly, including most of the electronics (the original input jack is still there). It has cloth wrapped wiring like that found in Custom Shop Strats, and new higher quality pots. I think it'd be funny to watch someone discover that while thinking it was a stock Squier.

The electronics were pretty cheap and kind of crappy, so I thought it was a good idea to change it all out. I've had problems with the input jack, which is the only original electronic part on the guitar so that will probably get changed out too.

When it come to modifying any guitar, you have to like the guitar enough to put money into it, because you sure won't recoup any money if you ever decide to get rid of it. I do recommend keeping all the factory stuff just in case you want to return it to stock condition.

If the guitar itself is a player, definately worth up-grading in my opinion.

That's what I did with mine. I still have all the stock parts, except they're scattered all over my room. If you look in my drawers it looks like I've cleaned up after several exploding guitars.

I put Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups in my Squier Standard Strat. I'm very happy with it. Go for it! 8)

I don't think you'd be disappointed with the Custom Shop 57/62's. And they're modestly priced as well. Be sure to replace all your crappy wiring with some decent CTS pots and an Oak/Grigsby switch as well. Follow the electronic mods up by replacing your zinc trem block with one made of cold-rolled steel and you'll transform that "sow's ear" into the proverbial silk purse.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay
