I voted neutral, because if you need that sound for what you play, then it is good, but if you need the single coil sound then it is bad.

This kind of thing is so subjective, that if you ask ten people you'll get 20 answers.

if you play stuff that needs the HB sound then get one. if you play a mix of stuff then an HSS configuration is a good compromise unless you can afford different guitars for different situations.

pretty much nailed it...if you would have made the poll about using a humbucker for a certain style of music or type of song then it might have been a different story.

I've been playing Strats almost exclusively for close to 40 yrs and I guess that I'm a purist(some may say obsessive)but I would only buy a Strat with all single coils as that's the original layout and that's good enough for me.The only way I'd ever consider an HSS is if it had coil split to make the humbucker function as a single coil.

I ,personally , have always found the bridge pickups on a Stratocaster to be thin, brittle and irrritating!
My FAVORITE Stratocaster switch positions have always been 2 through 5.
I have NO USE for a single coil bridge pickup!

The HSS formatted Stratocaster is one of the most versatile instruments!
Especially valuable for those playing in a copy band. (like myself)
You can go from Zeppelin to Hendrix at the flip of a switch!
I carry 1 HSS equipped Strat to my gigs and she covers ALL territories!!
(actually I carry 2 in case of string breakage....but mostly play the 1)

I voted bad, but I can see where they're useful and people have put forward logical arguments for having them - good job that logic doesn't work on me... :)

You , sir, are missing out on an incredible audible experience!
Imagine having the CHUNK of a Les Paul with the incredible woody, glassy, tubey, quacky (fill in your own adjectives) sounds of a Stratocaster right there at your fingertips to call upon, at will, onstage!
Again....an EXTREMELY versatile instrument!

And.... a damned SEXY looking guitar I might add!!

It's not my cup of tea, but I can understand why people like it and how could be useful. Personally I just wire the bridge pickup to a tone knob and it gets good tone that way.

I voted "neutral" because to me it's a matter of taste. That being said, I have a Strat-o-sonic with P-90's, a Big Apple Strat, and a Strat that I put EMG's (85/60) in, to go along with my single-coil Strats. Some guys will play a Les Paul or a 335, and those are fine guitars, but the Strat is so comfortable (for me, anyway) that I like to keep the same feel when I need humbuckers.

Just my opinion of course, I vote bad. For a humbucker sound I would reach for my 335 or LP, a Strat will never get that tone with a bucker IMO...

As for the bridge pup, on my '79 Strat it sounds beautiful and on my new Dlx I've replaced the pups with Fralins and the bridge is VERY nice and useful! Still single coil, just like a Strat should be.

Depends on what sound you want. I have 1 Strat that is set up HSS and 2 that are SSS.

I definitely opt for a Strat with HSH or HHH pickup combinations. You'll get an infinite array of humbucking and single-coil tones with this incredibly versatile setup.

By combining this with a 25dB active mid-boost circuit, a TBX tone pot and an S1 switching system, you can obtain some interesting results.
