HI there, I have a mim strat (which I really like) and am just wondering which strat would come next. Highway 1?
I love the look of the 70's style headstock on the highway 1's.
thanks

There is no pecking order, let your hands, ears, and pockets decide.

As always, YMMV, but if, when I think my playing skills have gotten to the point where I think I "deserve" a better guitar, I will likely get an American Standard.
That is, if I can afford one then.

American standard strats can be found on craiglist for good prices. I scored this inca silver all stock 97', for $600. It was a case queen, rarely touched. It was owned by a bassist who loved strats, bought it intending to learn to play it. She never found time, and college tuition came up due, so i got an as new Yankee axe cheap!

Hi JMD990 welcome to the Forum, the next step from an MIM Strat for me would be an MIM Tele as MIM Strats are plenty good and if you're pleased with the way it sounds try to expand your musical palette with guitars with different voices.I have 2 MIM Strats and wouldn't change a thing about them.Everyone should have at least one Strat and one Tele, you won't be disappointed. If your heart is set on another Strat try out other Strats and pick the one the sounds, feels and is priced right for you.The American Standard,MIM Jimmie Vaughns are great guitars you could check out.

Always play every guitar in your price range and pick the one that you like the best. With that being said I went from buying a Highway 1 Stratocaster, then I bought a Squier CV 60, and my latest aquisition is an American Special.

I never know what I am coming home with, I may go in lookin for a good MIM model and come home with a Chinese Squier. I have gone in looking for an American Standard and come home with a Highway 1.

Always play before you pay!!!

Change out the stock bar magnet pickups on your MIM. Upgrade the sustain block to a Callahan or Wilkinson if yours is the skinny zinc one. Tidy up any rough fret ends with a good correctly sized file. Chances are you might then find that you won't need to buy another Strat.

But if you must - I'd go for an American Special. Very handsome guitars, good pickups with a great sound and a nice price. You get the oversized 70s style headstock too. But I do have a fondness for the upgraded Highway as well, if funds don't quite stretch to a Special.

Well....if you love your MIM one, and it sounds like you want to add to the stable (your keeping it) then what I would suggest is you save your money and order a Custom shop one.

If you want a better guitar then what you have, why only take a half step?

I second that!! now that you have one good main axe...save money for a custom shop and in the meanwhile you will get to know your current axe even better and can tell what you really want and what not.
