hi there i have had my strat for quite a few years now, i bought it off a friend a good 10 years ago, and i really would like to know more about it. all i have been able to find out is it is a 1994 japan strat, never seen the colour anywhere else and dont know anything else about it, any help would be appreciated. it was stored in a very cold place, for 4 years so the varnish has cracked all the way down to the wood in places :( i would like to know if for values sake weather its worth stripping it down and re painting/varnishing it or should i leave it as it is. thanks for any answers in advance :)

if i were u, i'd keep the original color, that is one gorgious color, you don't see very many (if any at all) strats with that kind of grain/color

when i first saw it, if mistook it for a custom colored strat!

very nice guitar, (the mini humbucker is a nice touch 8) )

I think Showmasters have 24 fret necks....?

..I think it's a 50's reissue of some sort....look at the string tree.

thanks for the replys guys, yeah i thought it was a rare colour myself thats why i have been hesitant about stripping it, as u can see some of the cracks go right down to the wood, so to get it back up to perfect it would have to be a complete strip and redo job, i am loath to play it at the moment as i hate looking at the cracks :'( but i dont know if it would be possible to just take off the varnish, and fill in the cracks underneath with a filler or something to keep the finish like it is now, it is a georgous guitar and the pictures dont really do it justice, really needs a good clean up and resto job done to it which i would love to do myself, i nicknamed the paint holographic red, as it sort of shimmers in the light as a hologram does :) would like to know what the actual colour is called to see how i would go about sorting it out, thanks again in advance

...there's also a good chance of this guitar being a Foto-flame model.

hehe i really havn't ever been into the whole guitar scene and dont know this term sorry would you be able to elaborate a bit on some of the terms, sorry about my ignorance

i just had a goodle of foto-flame and found an excellent site with a picture of my exact guitar :) http://www.xhefriguitars.com/page7.html
after reading this i belive it will be impossible to strip it and keep the "paint" effect as it was actually film shrink wrapped around the guitar and not the actual grain of the wood :( so i belive my only option is to leave it as is and maybe try and sand down the cracks a millimeter or so and then relaquer it to smooth it out

You could take it to an experienced luthier and have it fixed.
Cold weather is bad for guitars. Keep them out of the cold!

It is obviously not anything on a custom shop level, but after reading the article it seems as if you have a piece of history on your hands. Not that it adds monetary value. Think of it this way Japan made them so good they moved the production to Mexico so it would not compete with the MIA.

I agree, take it to a luthier and have them fix it. It will look better if a pro does it and you will be much happier with the results. Also tell the luthier what kind of finish it is. Foto film.
