Hello

I am equipping a strat to have a Jimi sound and am still an amateur and knowing all of the terminology to know what kind of pickups I might want to try.

What I want is a big open sloppy sound with a round low end and a good singing high end. I love his sound on songs like Catfish Blues on the Blues cd.

Have any of you had any great luck in getting some pickups that emulate his tone?

I'd love to find some at more discount places like guitarfetish.com , but I'd love to learn what anyone else is using.

While those might be a fine choice; keep this in mind.....the DREADED 60 CYCLE HUM will STILL be present.

A more 'modern' NOISELESS choice, without sacrificing ANY of the 'Stratty-ness' would be this:

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=340006

I have them on numerous guitars of mine and LOVE them!!
I use them in the neck and middle on my MIM 60's Reverse Special (total Jimi-vibe guitar!!) with a DiMarzio Virtual Solo for the bridge....because it's fatter and more P-90 like!
That.....along with a Prescription Electronics Experience pedal and a Bob Sweet Ultra Vibe get me waaaay into 'Jimi Territory"!

I would go the pedal route instead of pups. Fuzz Face, Rotovibe, and Crybaby wah. There are signature pedals that will get you close and one of these wouldn't hurt either.

+1!

These plus a set of CS '69s should put your tone "in the ballpark". The rest will depend upon your picking technique.

If you want to nail Jimi's signature Strat sound without the 60-cycle hum, stick a set of Kinman AVn Woodstocks on your guitar. Lots of hump and punch, explosive attack and exceptional clarity, definition and projection.

These Woodstocks break into easily crunch under heavy pick attack, with heaps of Alnico tone character. Overdosed with projection and grit and powerful top end chime. Great for heavy rock and extreme distortion.

You'll get high output with the welcome advantage of Zero-Hum and moderate versatility.

Same as the CS '69s, but a lot quieter.

Note: The Woodstock Plus set includes the Hx-85, a hot bridge pickup which yields sounds similar to a P-90 soapbar or a late '50s humbucker.

I LOVE the Kinmans......but......their PRICE is what KILLS me!
The DiMarzio Area series could (IMHO) respectfully stand up against those high priced 'big boys', without killing your wallet!

Okay if you want to get nit-picky on us! Yeah the 60 cycle hum WAS part of his sound....which was most noticeable during song breaks and audience banter.
Jeez........should we all take up a nasty heroin addiction to try and achieve his level of celestial/cerebral consciousness too......?????

It would be nice to get Jimi's 'Stratty' tones WITHOUT all the antiquated noise!!

Here we go again. You will not ever, "nail" Hendrix's sound. It's been tried so many times it's laughable.Randy Hansen didn't nail it, Trower even though he always said he wasn't trying to really was IMO but didn't. You won't get it with Hendrix strings, Hendrix didn't even use Dean Markley strings, he used Fender Rock N Roll strings according to most of his techs accounts. Oh, and this is what wouldn't hurt http://www.zzounds.com/item--MSHJHSTACK
sorry forgot it in my last post.

You'll have some fun trying to get close as we all did, but no one has "nailed it"
Except maybe this guy....

The problem I see is someone taking all these suggestions seriously mine included, spending a bunch of cash on gear only to be disappointed in the end. Hendrix sounded like Hendrix even when he used his Flying V.

AFAIK, Jimi has also used a Jaguar.

Image

The Squier Super Sonic is inspired by an early '60s photo showing him playing his Jag upside down.

Best thing you can do to my mind, and it's completely free.

Play with wild abandon and supreme confidence. That will arguably get you closer to JH's sound than anything else.
Also dont bother tuning up too well, rely on your ears to bend up to pitch when your strings go flat. If they go sharp, learn to fret lower and bend up.

When people ask about Hendrix's sound all I can think is, which one? Everything he recorded was different. Look at experienced then take a listen to rainbow bridge, axis, cry of love or ladyland. Their all completely different and recorded using completely different gear.
You'll never get a Belly Button Window sound out of a strat or 69 pickups.
