Hi there my name is johnny Reid I have a 1979 anniversary Strat. It is one of the first pearl white ones. It is in good condition but over the years some small pieces of the white paint have dropped off. I was considering having a clear lacquer over it in order to stabilise and preserve it. I feel that if I don’t do something in another 20 years there will be no paint on it at all and deemed worthless. Anybody got any advice.

I'm not sure how that'll affect the value of the guitar, but I know that Fender recalled the white 25th Anniversary strats to have them refinished to Porsche Silver due to such heavy finish cracking with the white ones.

Hi Johnny. If I were you I'd leave it alone. I'm sure you will lower the value on that guitar if you do anything to it! Even thought it's flacking, its still more rare then the Silver ones. It may not look good but its authentic. Besides, people pay big money to get an ugly strat :)

I'd leave it be. If the paint on it is that unstable you can never tell what a clear coat would do to it. At least if you leave it alone it is all original.
People are paying BIG BUCKS for guitars with the paint coming off.
