I was wondering if i could take out the mounting screws in my am. std. strat and install these schaller strap locks?

the ones seen here:

They should fit just fine with no need for drilling. I have replaced the original strap buttons on my Am Std Tele with the Schallers with no problems.

Do keep up with the little felt pieces that are on the guitar though to prevent the strap buttons from digging into the body as you tighten the screw down.

Both will go straight in without mods...

The only change in Schaller Strap Locks since they came to market decades ago is the ones made prior to 1990 had "Made in W. Germany" stamped on them. Schaller, Fender/Schaller... all the same.

It shouldn't be a problem. Worse case senerio, the new screws are too small, which if so, using toothpicks in the holes with a small dab of wood glue would be fine. Word of advice, put some wax around the hole to prevent the glue from sticking to the body.

Hi There.
I use the Shallers on all my guitars, and when i bought my new strat, I had the store install a set before I left with it.

No problem at all.

No...In fact you may want to glue in a toothpick (or very small dowel) to fill in the hole and then screw in the Schallers. The last time I put Schaller strap locks on a Fender, I had to use the toothpick quick fix to tighten the hole up. The Schaller screws have a slightly smaller diameter than the Fender OEM screws. You may find that the mounting screws wiggle out without filling the holes first...at least that's what hapened to me.

After reading a bunch of reviews about the Ernie ball strap locks being superior to schallers etc, i did a side by side comparison at the store, removing the locks from the package, and operating them all. i compared schallers, dunlops, and ernie balls. It was a no brainer, i easily came to the conclusion that the ernie balls were the best. After installing them, and using them, i know i made a wise decision. The screws for the ernie balls, are slightly larger and longer than the ones that come out of the factory installed buttons on American strats. This makes the install of the ernie balls easy. you just make a couple of extra turns, to secure the new screws solidly. no hard cranking, no worries about breaking the screw off, or if the hole is too big. I highly recommend that you pass on the schallers. The ernie balls have a much better mechanism, and having two buttons, one on each side of the lock, requires squeezing both buttons together at the same time eliminates the possibiliy of a bump on the lock releasing your guitar to hit the floor.

Funny you should say this, I feel the same about Dunlop strap locks. I no longer use the Schallers.

That's really interesting, what is it exactly about the dunlops that you prefer then?

Push button/ pull release, all metal/no plastic, and if I forget my strap (not that ever had), I can buy a cheepie Strap for the practice session and it slips over the strap button as just as secure as standard strap button.

Unlike Schallers that are a Pull/slip release. The guitar strap button is too small for me to feel comfortable playing with a strap hooked onto them (should I ever forget my strap at home).

The concept of the Ernie Ball Strap locks is similar to the Dunlops, but the button looks easier to accidently push for an unintended release. Also the part that mounts onto the guitar looks like a similar design to the Schallers...I would not feel comfortable hooking a strap onto it in a pinch.

I understand your concern rkreisher, but the buttons mounted on the guitar are much bigger than you believe. they are actually, even more secure than standard strap buttons and schallers etc, because they have a squared off lip where the strap hole would have to stretch over, as opposed to the taper on the standard buttons. And as i explained earlier, the strap lock part, has two buttons, one on each side of the lock, that have to be squeezed together at the same time to release the lock, eliminating any possiblity of a bump against the locks causing an accidental release. Plus, the ernie balls have the lowest, roundest, and widest tops on the locks, greatly reducing the danger of the strap locks dinging up the guitar. If you search youtube under ernie ball strap lock installation, you'll see that the buttons that the locks connect to are the perfect size, and very secure. Plus, they are rated at 600 pounds!

I guess I'm old fashioned. I keep my strap in the case with the guitar and don't beat the guitar with the strap locks. Also, my heaviest guitar only weighs 450 lbs, so I'm good there too. The only worry I have is the strap gremlin that pulls the buttons out on my Schallers and bumps the guitar up slightly, thus allowing the guitar to crash to the floor. No idea how I manage!

Cheers!
