Post subject: How to remove paint from a Fender Bullet S3 body.

Can anybody help me with this problem: how to remove paint on a Fender Bullet body. I recently bought a Fender bullet S3 from 1983. The original finish was a sort of vintage white and is still underneath the ugly and poor paintjob it had in a brown burgundy.
Could this layer of I think it is carbody paint, be removed without damaging the original finish?
