So I recently swapped the stock pickups in my 09 MIM standard for a set up kenny wayne shepherd custom pickups, which come with the aged white covers. I wanted to keep the stock white pickup covers, but for some reason they wouldn't fit on the KWS pups. They wouldn't slide down the whole way and would rock back and forth about halfway onto the pup. I looked but couldn't really see a reason for this. Does anyone know what may have caused this or how I can get my white covers to fit?

There is a handy device for all those measurement mysteries one encounters in life they require little skill to operate. Digital calipers.

It would be either the 'flat work' is too wide, the winding is too wide or the magnets are in a different position. This tool will let you know what it is.

I'd ask the manufacturer if they have some white covers you can purchase. Far easier than making some fit.

They're Fender-made pups, and from looking at it with the naked eye everything looked the same. I'll see if we've got any of those laying around though.

Custom Shop '54 pickups are the same way. They are augmented. The pickups with plastic bobbins are just a bit smaller on the top.

So what do you do? File the wider ones a little bit?

That's exactly what I did. Be real careful not to hit the windings.

Alright then next time I change strings I'll see if I can't trim the top of the pickup bobbin down a bit.

Just the top part of the black plastic right? And obviously don't touch the copper.

Yes. Just filing the long sides worked for me. Or you can see if your local guitar shop has the wider cover. I didn't use my Custom shop white covers and tossed them because I like the aged ones originally on my guitar. Too bad, we could have traded without filing.

On my strat project I encountred a similar problem and got some covers from allparts. They seem just that hair bigger as to be more universal if you will.
