To give Fender a little credit....it's not like they're chopping down old growth forests. These are farmed trees, renewable resources. It's not like Fender is leaving a mountainside naked with nothing but stumps. It's all replanted and managed.

If you want to complain about wasted lumber think about all the paper that is tossed everyday. Guitars are hardly a waste of wood. They're around for decades and by then the forest they came from is ready for harvest again.

As long as you play them all at least on some occasions, if you can afford the cost and the space, then all you need to remeber is that whoever has the most guitars, wins!!! :P
If they are just collecting dust, what's the point. They are meant to be played and I do that even with my more collectable axes.
The right gutars are not just instruments, they can also be works of art.
Every one has it's own feel and sound, so more than one can help make you want to play as you can always find one to fit your mood, or inpiration if you have a collection to chose from.
I have both types of GAS and my wife never complains....well the one gas and the blanket over the head trick does get a kick from her....

To me a Les Paul, Strat and some kind of semi or hollowbody should be a part of everyones collection eventually(money permitting).

If you want more and can afford them, then buy them. So what if they just hang on a wall? It's their money.

I've got an ever changing collection that swells and shrinks all the time. I also usually make an extra $1000 or 2 in profit every year from selling a few. If I see a bargain on craigslist I'll pick it up, maybe play it for a week or so, then just sell it for couple hundred profit. If you look at Ebay often you'll see guitars get sold and then they're listed again the next day for $200 more. And people buy em. It's not a bad way to make a few spare bucks.

Most of the guitars I have listed were purchased because I wanted experience repairing, restoring and setting up electrics. New guitars usually don't need much in the way of serious work. I plan to start a small business in guitar repair/restoration, so all of my pawn shop specials gave me invaluable experience that I would not have gotten without them. I love all my $100 guitars cuz I brought them back to life from the dead. I especially like my Charvel/Jackson hybrid. It started life as a Charvel Charvette Model 100. The neck was trashed due to a previous owners poor care. I got it for $100. I know the body is laminated, don't matter for a project axe. I found a Jackson compound radius neck at Music go Round for $20 in a bin in the back. What a DEAL!! It bolted on with a shim to correct neck angle. It had to be totally re-set as far as intonation, string height, trem set-up etc. It provided me with hours of enjoyment and learning. It is now a really nice axe for hard rock/metal. Not bad for $120 and some of my time. It also has a cool orange finish that I love.

You summed it up for me...thank you!

Duuuude. How do you find your wife with those like 50 guitars cluttering up your house. I mean really-how long does it take to tune all those and play them. So you even play guitar or do you just buy them? I feel bad with my 2 guitars now...

Sheesh, OP...I wish I had your collection! That's sweet!

I own 5 guitars right now....(2 strats, and Ibanez, and 2 acoustic guitars). I wish I could keep it down to a dull roar, but I can already see I'm eventually going to have to get a left handed 12-string. I'd also love something newer with double humbuckers so I can retire my '88 Ibanez (still debating the Floyd Rose), and yeah...I'd like to have an arch-top guitar too as well as a few amplifiers to choose from!! (I only have 2 right now..)

Eh, I think you should get a few more OP: Unless youv'e got everything out there...there's always room for more! Mwahahahaah!!!!

Do you have too many guitars?
How do you define "too many"?
If you use them all--no you don't.
If there are ones you don't use?
Yes you do.

I've been asked how many guitars I need?
My answer is, "At least one more."

guitars are like wives
i think you have too many when you don't understand them and love them and care for them all equally

I have 8 but I think it's near the limit for my present GF. She came over the other night and looked around and noted "You have 6 guitars?" My reply was "No there are two more under the bed." and she gave me one of those looks. So, it looks like the next new guitar will probably also involve a new GF too!

Hey guys I am new here but not new to guitar. I just read the opening post in this thread and I have to say that is an obsession more then anything! There is no need really to have that many guitars. Unless your a collector! Then they become pieces of artwork , but if they are just bought just for the sake of having it then ya it is an obsession.

Anyway I am currently looking at buying my last guitar and it will be a Fender Strat HSS. I have 3 guitars already that all have different purposes and I want the Strat to fill the void I have in my musical genre.

My guitars include:
1986 BC Rich Assassin ST-III
2001 Dean Evo Special
2007 Ibanez RGR320EX
