Of course, the real trick in this whole thing is to again have enough willpower to actually SELL the extras, instead of letting them accumulate.

Yup, there's the rub.

I don't sell any. So I only accumulate those I know I want for the long term.

I would say that you should have as many as you need! If you can afford to keep 100 than thats fine :)

Also Guitars are a great investment if you buy the right ones (Fender) However buying lots of guitars does not make you a better player..

Nice to meet everyone :)

We will never resolve this issue. Some of the people on here buy just what they need. Others (like me) buy guitars to play and buy others we love. Still others are serious collectors. Many times it depends upon how much money you have to spend on them.

We all have different reasons for why we bought them and for the number of guitars we own which brings me back to my original response some pages back, "Who's to say how many is too may?" I'm really surprised at the number of passionate responses I've read on this thread!

I almost agree with needing only three (LP, Strat, Accoustic). BUT, I keep more for different tunings, broken string back-up guitar, etc. Therefore ...
I have:
1983 Standard Strat
2001 Strat (Texas Special)
2002 MIM Strat
2005 Schecter C-1 Elite (can't afford Gibson)
1998 Ovation Celebrity
199? Epiphone 12-string

You're right, there's nothing to be resolved. Each person will determine for himself how many is JUST right. Sort of a The Three Bears approach to the whole thing.

The whole "need" thing is funny. Does someone actually say, "I need 25 guitars, no, I need 50 guitars, no, I need 100 guitars!"? I guess guys do say, "I need a hollowbody, a strat-type, a tele-type, a LP-type, a V, an Explorer-type, an SG-type, ... , in order to have all bases (sounds and styles, that is) covered."

Exactly

Howard Roberts would show up at the call with a hollowbody. If he absolutely had to have the icy sound of a solid body, he'd go out to his car and get his Tele. And that was it. And yet he played more licks in more styles on more recordings on those two guitars than any man alive. If you'd told Howard he needed more guitars, I think he would have told you to go home and practice.

"The right guitar for the sound" is a fantasy. I watched Paul McCartney's band the other night, and his lead player nailed the tones from records spanning five decades on a semi-hollow that looked like a Gibson Trini Lopez.

I figure when I can do THAT, then maybe I need a another guitar.

Right, a guy should be able to extract a lot of the desired sounds/tones from a multi-pickup guitar and amp. Just choose the right pickup and adjust the knobs on your amp accordingly.

People are often surprised to hear what guitar their heroes actually used. For example, that Jimmy Page used a tele on a lot of the early LZ stuff and not a Les Paul.

:shock: That's an insane amount of guitars!

I think it's best to have a small group of guitars that would cover all of the different tonal bases. For example having a Strat, Tele, Jazzmaster, Les Paul and a Gibson ES335 would cover all the bases for me :D

Lemme see, they're all tonally different so I "need":

an acoustic classical gut string, rosewood back and sides and cedar top;
an acoustic steel string, rosewood back and sides and spruce top;
an acoustic steel string, maple top, sides and back;
a 12-string acoustic;
a Gibson ES175;
a Gretsch Tennessee Rose;
a Gibson Les Paul Custom;
a Gibson Les Paul Standard;
a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe;
a Gibson ES335;
a Epiphone Casino w/ P90's
a Fender Mustang;
a Fender Strat with an ash body;
a '57 Fender Strat w/ "V" neck;
a Fender Telecaster;
a Fender "P" bass
a Fender Jazz bass

16 is good start for covering all the tones. :wink:

drats! yeah, a Rickenbacker 12 string electric too! :lol:

and can we include other stringed instruments too? if so, I "need" a mandolin and a banjo and a ukelele (can't spell that last one so I must not "need" it too badly!)

By the way, Fender 12 string Strats are MUCH better than Riccys, IMHO. (and yes, I own both). :wink:

I'm also surprised at the serious debate this seaminlgy harmless question raises.

I thought I was getting too many guitars, but I've been able to loan one to a real good Sprouting Metal Shredder I've knows since he was a kid. His Epiphone was having Jack Problems.

My left handed Niece just got a right handed Squier Starter pack, So my Dad is stringing one of his lefty so she can try both out for a while. For me, that justified any number of guitars, and thankfully enabled my Habit for years to come.

my list, in order of apperance.
Gloabal 1/2 sized acoustic
1988 Fender Standard Stratocaster/w Kahler Spyder Trem. (MIA)
2000 FR-50 resonator
1995 Gibson NighHawk
2004 Fender Deluxe Players Stratocaster (MIM)
2003 Joe Pass Epiphone Eperor II
2005 Fender Buddy Guy sig Straocaster (MIM)

(on loan) Squier Mirror and Black Tele.
non guitar:
Aida F-Style Mandolin
Epiphone A-Atyle Mandolin
Epiphone Mandobird

I need More Strats
