I have a few I don't play so much anymore, but I just can't bring myself to sell one. I never suffered buyer's remorse when adding gear to my collection, but I've had regrets after I've sold things . . . like my straight from the Fullerton factory '71 Fender Mustang in three tone sunburst with the rectangular case . . . but that's another long, sad story.

I have 4 electrics and 2 of them are messed up now, one's input is broken, and the other's bridge pickup is broken. So now I only have 2 so I am really glad that I don't just have one guitar. And I can fix my other 2 when I have the time and money to do it.

I like that philosophy.

By the way, where is that guy that has a room that looks like a guitar wall in a music store? I think he was australian if I'm not mistaken. This thread would be perfect for him, hehe.

Well, Joe Perry admitted to have over 600 guitars, so... I guess you can have as many as you want to keep up with. :P

I have 3. :(

More than 50 is probably too many, unless you go into the selling business.

Even with about 20, they don't see enough playing time.
And they get lonely

In a previous life I was a nutty instrument collector and trader -- and I think where I personally knew that I had far too many instruments was when, on two distinct occasions, I opened a case and stared in awe, mouth agape, as I literally had zero recollection of owning or even purchasing the instrument inside. When you reach that point, there is no question it is time to downsize. :-))

Groovemongrel is on the right track.

Even though I make a living producing music and could write off the purchase of any number of guitars, I have one awesome Strat-style homebrew, one PRS with P-90s, one truly great acoustic, one great Fender bass.

I can't think of a reason to own anymore, and can think of plenty of reasons not to.

It's antimusical to own piles of guitars. Instead of really practicing, getting better, learning to sculpt the sound of the instrument with you hands and your ear, you pick up a different guitar and play exactly the same stuff you played five minutes ago, convincing yourself that it's "better" because you've now chosen the right tool for the job.

In my work I hire and record lots of musicians who aren't rock musicians. My favorite string player player is a woman who plays cello with great passion and conviction. She owns one concert-grade cello, and a back-up. That's it. I hire a killer sax player all the time who owns a clarinet, a flute, and one each of soprano, alto and tenor saxes. If you told Debbie the cellist or Rick the saxman that they needed different instruments t make different sounds or for different songs, they would not understand what you were talking about.

Note choice, phrasing, velocity, playing ahead of or behind the beat... Debbie and Rick know that these and so many more performance aspects are SO much more important than whether the instrument they're playing is a little brighter or a little darker in tone than another one.

And so they became musicians, paying attention to their performance and not screwing around with how many saxophones or cellos they "need to cover all the bases."

So i restrict myself to just a few guitars, so that I will concentrate on the technique of my playing and not which guitar I'm holding. And when I see someone on line who has taken way too many pictures of their "arsenal," or who lists 20 axes in their sig, I always want to reply, "Hey, nice checkbook! Let's hear you play."

Somehow that sentence seems oxymoronic to me. I do know what you mean though.

I say if you've got the bucks and love guitars own as many as you wish. I do think a guitar player would do well to have a Strat, LP, some sort of semi-hollow or hollow body, a 6 string acoustic and a 12 string acoustic. That about covers all the tonal needs.

Speaking as someone who does indeed have a lot of guitars, I can say that the collection tends to group itself into three distinct groups.

1. Collectable Guitars - these are guitars that you love the look of, or are just keeping in as unplayed condition as possible because they have a collectable value to you. 8)

2. Players - These are guitars you own that for whatever reason, they just beg to be played. Note, some collectables can be in this group but it takes some serious self control not to wear out what should be a collectable guitar.

3. Sellers - These are guitars that you have bought for some reason at some stage, but are now surplus to requirements for whatever reason. A case where this has happened in my situation is where I have originally bought a CIJ Fender and then manage to buy an earlier MIJ version of the same thing. In this case the CIJ can be sold. Of course, the real trick in this whole thing is to again have enough willpower to actually SELL the extras, instead of letting them accumulate...

In my case, my new year's resolution for 2008 will be to thin the collection a little...as it is indeed possible to open a case and find a guitar that you have forgotten you had. :D
