i personally think you can never have enough. its a lifelong hobby and it is also an investment. i also think people should be generous, if you have upwards of 10 or more guitars, i think people should maybe give 1 away to an aspiring musician in the family or friend. ive already given 1 to my little cousin and he was so appreciative. it may just spark him to be the next eric clapton, who knows.....

Haha, thanks, they just sorta accumulated over the last 25 years or so.

A lot of them are very affordable axes, I have 4 or 5 at around the $400-$500 US mark, and the LP Classic I got for $750, but everything else is $100-$250.

Up until last week I had one more, but I actually sold one!

I have a couple acoustics too.

I liked the comment about how many shoes my wife has. You hit it right on the spot with that comment.
Most of the guitars I have listed were bought used, in pawn shops, music stores or from friends. They cost between $50 and $200 each. I guess I would rather have 5 guitars with 5 differents sounds and feels for $1000 than 1 guitar with 1 sound and feel for the same money. I also got a lot of experience with repair, set-up, and restoration by buying guitars that actually NEEDED to be worked on, as opposed to taking a new guitar and tinkering with it when nothing was really wrong with it to start with. I am a big advocate of working on my own axes, to get them to play the way I like, not some guy in the factory, or some guitar tech who doesn't know my style. Nothing like installing your own pick-ups, or putting a new neck on a body to learn about set-ups. I have also found that I like different guitars set up different ways. I like Les Pauls set up with low action, and Strats set up with a little higher action. I have some Strats with tremelos set up to utilize the trem bar, and some set up as a fixed bridge. I have some guitars that are always in drop D tuning, or open tuning for slide use. I also use DADGAD tunings(coool sounds) on one guitar. It helps me when I record to have a variety of sounds available to me without going thru hoops to set up a guitar for a certain use. Would an artist use only 2-3 colors of paint when trying to get the"right" shade of color to convey the right image.
I know that 20 guitars is excessive, but it is a much better obsession that my wifes 60 pairs of shoes!!

My guitars are a little more expensive than yours (not a lot), but that's my feeling exactly. So much fun to have a bunch that you can rotate through. I bring different guitars to each show!

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure my wife doesn't have 60 pairs of shoes! :( But to keep things in perspective, I got a buddy on another board who has over 100 guitars, and 95% of them are really nice US-built guitars, often vintage or Custom Shop models.

So 20's not really excessive.

Be glad you don't!

But... if you're gigging you definitely do need more. Always need to have a backup for string breaks and other technical difficulties.

We (women) don't need 60 pairs of shoes. Although my shoes cost as much as a guitar. Nevermind.

My husband tells me I only need one guitar since I can't play two at one time. :P

I partially agree... no, we don't need that many shoes, but mine aren't too expensive, but one thing that a guitarist needs is more than just 1 guitar...
I have 2 guitars. Well, ok, three, but the third doesn't really count cause it's just packed away. It's a cheap acoustic with like 4 year old strings... Ah! that thing is aweful!!! But I LOVE my strats!!! A MIM and an American.

Err... storage and insurance become a real issues with larger collections.

For what it's worth, I have broken through the 150 barrier...but I do need to sell a few, just haven't had time to do it.

So a I guess that my vote is for too many guitars is never enough. 8)
