Recently, i swap my neck pickup on my fender strat am std. Previously i used texas special, i change it to cs 54.. Actually i do love them both, texas is punchy&warmner and the cs 54 is more vintage, belly tone, sweet..

I decided to make a sound comparison between those pickup. I play the same lick and recorded with the same setting
here it is :

Maybe its the microphone, or how you recorded it, but I can't hear a difference at all.

I like the CS 54's. They seem to have a little more attack. I've got a set in my Classic 60's Strat. Just depends on what you like.

i listened to the vid a few times...i agree it is pretty hard to distinguish between the two from that recording, but the texas specials sound a little fatter in my opinion. from what i've heard custom shop pickups and texas specials are supposed to be pretty similar in tone anyway.

"Heard" they are suppose to sound similar ?

Texas Specials are Custom Shop.

I don't know why Fender would make four different sets of Stratocaster pickups that sound the same ?

sorry, maybe i was unclear. i'm talking about the texas special pickups vs. the custom shop '54 pickups, which are the two sets that the TS is asking about. i meant "heard" mostly in the context of research, talking to people in music stores, and the few sound samples i've heard (like the video in the OP).

O.K. that makes sense. I think my post came off a little harsh now that I re-read it. Thanks for being understanding. That wasn't my intent. Some get rubbed the wrong way and then feel they have to lash out !

I have had Texas Specials (VERY nice !) and now have CS '69's and they are QUITE different.

Happy Pickin'

cloud011085,

I liked the Texas Special better. I had to listen a few times before I could decide. I guess it is just a matter on which tone you prefer. I thought the Texas Special sounded a little brighter, but that may be my crappy speakers on my laptop.

I do have the Texas Specials in one of my guitar (all three positions), and I prefer the neck pick-up over the Alnico 3 in the same positition of my other guitar.

The one you prefer is the one I would stay with. Yours is the only real opinion that should matter.

thanks a lot guys for your opinions.. i decided to stick with custom shop 54..

Actually the differences is a little, yes the texas special has more mids, punch, and warmer, the cs 54 is more bright, vintage bell tone like...
